bumpbumpbump ;)Hoping for some children's book enthusiasts out there! I mentioned as many descriptive/unique things as I could remember, but if there are any questions I can answer to help make this more identifiable, please ask!
Cracker, the Horse Who Lost His Temper: Communicating Christian Values to Children, by Ethel Barrett? He lost his temper once when the little girl wanted to go down another path than the one where the clover and wild strawberries were and that they usually went towards.
WOW!!!!!!!! I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU FIGURED IT OUT, but that's the one!! :D :D :D
As I said initially, I've literally been searching for YEARS... can't even count anymore the variety of search terms I've tried. And I figured even if someone had an idea of what it might be, it would take several suggestions before we found the right one. But you found it with the first one!
Thank you SO much! The other wonderful surprise is I didn't remember at all that this was part of a series! But when I went to the Amazon link, I saw the others, and they brought back a bunch of memories! It's amazing what joy the things we loved in childhood give us.
Thanks again ever so much, you're a genius!
Oh, wonderful! I actually have the book still from childhood (though I'm not so sure I still have the tape), and your description of 70's style illustrations, accompanying tape, and wanting strawberries just clicked. So I pulled my copy off the shelf and checked that my memory was in fact correct about the strawberries. My family had several of her books.
Well, I'm so glad it clicked for you! It's funny how different the story actually is from what I remember; funny how our memories shift things. But for some reason the strawberries stuck in my mind, so I at least got that right - glad they stuck in yours, too!I looked it up on Amazon, and the cheapest copy is going for $62! :0 The other books in the series aren't as bad, but still fairly expensive. If you ever think you don't want your copy(ies) anymore, send me a message, as I'd be very interested in purchasing it/them. We moved a lot when I was a kid, and as a result had to sell most of my childhood things. But it's obviously a special thing to be able to still have them, so I completely understand if you're planning to hang on to yours! :)
Regardless, thanks again so much for helping me finally get this solved! :))

Something happened where the horse either got lost or stuck, and evening was approaching, and it was worried it couldn't get back home before nightfall, and it began to feel bad for disobeying and running away. But the owner & child of course manage to find the horse and bring it safely home.
I read this in the mid-80s, but the illustrations were reminiscent of the 60s & 70s - colorful/bright earth tones, lots of long swirling lines, especially in hair or anything they wanted to emphasize the flowy-ness of, lol. Similar in both colors and style to this image: www.pinterest.com/pin/550987335638025... Or similar to the lines of the hair in these pictures: www.pinterest.com/pin/550987335638025... This was a short picture book, targeted toward 4-6 year-olds, I'd guesstimate. It had a few full sentences on each page, but was also accompanied by a tape, so the child could "read along" even if they didn't know how to read. I remember the voice of the lady on the tape had an accent similar to Haley Mills or Julie Andrews.
I loved this story as a child, and have hunted for it for years online. I have a post up at Stump the Bookseller (http://w1.loganberrybooks.com/stumpth...), but so far no luck. So I'm trying here! Hopefully with this active community, someone will recognize/remember this book. TIA! :)
