I'm not sure what the genre of this book is. I think it's YA, but I'm not 100% sure.

Plot: A son of a famous rock star (maybe called the Spider or Spyder, don't remember) deliberately drives the car his father gave him off of a cliff (while he jumps off) and then hitchhikes all the way to Portland, Maine. (I'm pretty sure he was in NYC before, because I think he confronted his dad there before he ran away.) A store owner or manager or something lets him stay above the store (or at his house?) and in exchange the runaway works for him in his store. The runaway (I think his name is Adam or something?) joins the band of the manager's son, the Toy Soldiers. The band enters the local battle of the bands. I remember that the main character falls in love with the daughter of the manager, but she already has a boyfriend in the beginning of the book. Later, she breaks up with him or he dumps her or something. I also remember that the main character's mom is mentally ill, and she's one of the main reasons why he is angry with his father. He thinks that his father abandoned them when they were at their worst.

I think this is an older book, but I don't know the exact publication date.
