Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments Most people start reading comics in single issues or trade paperbacks. Eventually, we made the change to the oversized hardcovers at some point. I'm curious, what book got you hooked into the deluxe hardcover world?

For me, strangely enough, it was the Marvel Zomnibus. I won it on an eBay auction for a fairly cheap price without fully realizing how big the book would be. Once I received it I was hooked and I've been chasing the hardcover dragon ever since.

Donovan | 1154 comments Great topic! Gotta say The Goon. I read like the first four trades and was sold, took a leap on the Library edition and it blew my mind. Super thick pages, sewn binding, just the size alone. It totally changed the reading experience. Now I know to try out a trade or two and if I love the series, sell those and upgrade!

Ooh_jim | 251 comments I think my first oversized hardcover was probably the X-Statix Omnibus. Around that time I would have also gotten Astonishing X-Men, Immortal Iron Fist, The Runaways OHCs, and the Deluxe Y: The Last Man volumes.

Rick | 41 comments For me it was the Dark Tower Omnibus. I love the novels so much I decided to pick up the omnibus after perusing a few trades. I wanted to add it to my Dark Tower library and now I only buy oversized hardcovers (or the best hardcover formats available: i.e. Bone, Maus, Essex County).

My comic/graphic novel habits now look like this: 1. I read the stories digitally. 2. If I like them enough I wait for the ohc/omnibus/absolute/library edition. 3. Reread in the new format and enjoy. 4. Repeat until broke or out of bookshelf space.

Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments I went in reverse order Rick. My friend talked up Dark Tower so much that I decided to get the omnibus. Probably not the best place to start on the series, but I enjoyed it enough to move on to the novels.

Rick | 41 comments That's cool, Reece. I guess that means Ka really is a wheel.

Paul (paulsaini) | 163 comments I'm a relatively new omnibus/HC collector for a few years...but for me it was the Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus. I had the single issues (gave them away years ago...wish I didn't now!) but I thought it would be amazing to read the event in one single book! Little did I know it that it would not be presented in chronological order! I still enjoyed it never the less. I absolutely love cosmic Marvel...it's what got me into reading comics...Captain Marvel, Adam Warlock and Thanos storylines from Starlin and the like just amazed me.

From there I decided to focus on my favourite characters, namely Daredevil, Batman and Thanos. Nowadays I keep branching out into new stories I 'have' to collect and read and the collection keeps growing. I really need that bookshelf.

Donovan | 1154 comments Nice. I try to focus on Batman and Superman, but am open to really any indie series out there. Bats seems to get screwed for OHCs though. And I also need a bookcase!

Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments Yeah, I'm surprised there aren't more Batman deluxe editions or omnis. With his popularity I'm sure they'd sell easily. Knightfall may begin to change that problem.

Donovan | 1154 comments Hopefully. I have like two Bat hardcovers.

My memory isn't good enough to remember my first hardcover, but I vaguely remember them first starting to come out in the 90's but they were rare. The best ones were done by Graphitti Designs and were mini Absolute Editions: A slipcase, one or two HCs with ribbon bookmarks, leather covers, etc. I have the Kingdom Come, Crisis on Infinite Earths and Dark Knight Returns which I believe is all they did like that.

Donovan | 1154 comments That's awesome. Sadly I didn't get into comics till way into adult life.

message 13: by Reece (new)

Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments Yeah, it would've been nice to have started collecting early so that I wouldn't have missed some of the oop books. But then again, I probably didn't have money to collect back then.

Donovan | 1154 comments Exactly. Don't even have enough now ; )

I'm actually not sure what the first omnibus volumes was that I bought. But, I do know the first Absolute I bought was Absolute Batman Hush. I was in a Barnes and Nobles and saw it sealed on the shelf and bought it just because it looked so awesome. Then I read it, it exceeded my expectations, and I loved it. :)

I'm quite certain my first omnibus was the amazing spiderman v1. Can't remember my first absolute. Maybe watchmen.

message 17: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments My first omnibus was the recent Lee Doctor Strange. Not super into the bulk.

Nickviola | 1019 comments My wife got me a paper back copy of Y: The Last Man for my birthday 3 years ago after I had started getting back into single issues comics for the first time in almost 20 years (im 35 now). Apparently the guy in my local shop suggested it based a description of me (in retrospect, who is Y: The Last Man NOT a good fit for?). About 6 months later I was frustrated with the X comics and since the X-Men had always been my favorite team I looked for ways to go back and read old issues. I didn't like the digital experience so stumbled upon the Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 Omni on eBay and DRAMATICALLY overpayed for it (before understanding about re-prints, shopping on IST, etc.). Now I am off single issues completely and loving collecting.
