My comic/graphic novel habits now look like this: 1. I read the stories digitally. 2. If I like them enough I wait for the ohc/omnibus/absolute/library edition. 3. Reread in the new format and enjoy. 4. Repeat until broke or out of bookshelf space.

From there I decided to focus on my favourite characters, namely Daredevil, Batman and Thanos. Nowadays I keep branching out into new stories I 'have' to collect and read and the collection keeps growing. I really need that bookshelf.

My memory isn't good enough to remember my first hardcover, but I vaguely remember them first starting to come out in the 90's but they were rare. The best ones were done by Graphitti Designs and were mini Absolute Editions: A slipcase, one or two HCs with ribbon bookmarks, leather covers, etc. I have the Kingdom Come, Crisis on Infinite Earths and Dark Knight Returns which I believe is all they did like that.

I'm actually not sure what the first omnibus volumes was that I bought. But, I do know the first Absolute I bought was Absolute Batman Hush. I was in a Barnes and Nobles and saw it sealed on the shelf and bought it just because it looked so awesome. Then I read it, it exceeded my expectations, and I loved it. :)
I'm quite certain my first omnibus was the amazing spiderman v1. Can't remember my first absolute. Maybe watchmen.

For me, strangely enough, it was the Marvel Zomnibus. I won it on an eBay auction for a fairly cheap price without fully realizing how big the book would be. Once I received it I was hooked and I've been chasing the hardcover dragon ever since.
