ABANDONED. SciFi novel about children who are experimented on and one becomes telepathic reaching out to mother with chalkboard

I read this book about a decade ago. I remember the cover being blue and I think it may have had a chalkboard on it with ghost writing. The plot is some kids go on a field trip in a bus and they are though to all have died in an accident. However, they were actually abducted for testing. One of the boys becomes telepathic through the experiments and tries to get his mom to save him by writing on his chalkboard in his room that he is alive. It's a Dean Koontz type book , but I don't think he wrote it. If anyone finds this I will be so so appreciative!
