“We need food,” you say.
Lee says nothing.
“We need food,” you say again.
“Look,” Lee says, “We’ll go into one of these country houses, break in and lock it back up,”
“No, we need food,” you hear yourself mutter for a third time. You feel numb, like you’re watching everything from a distance.
There is a silence between you and him for a few moments as the countryside road rushes past the windows. Your mind is dizzy with images of your friends back in the field. Suzy’s face flashes in front of you, wide-eyed, possessed.
“There’s no way this is for more than a few days, the army’s gonna come,” Lee mutters, more to himself than to you.
You realise that you and Lee have totally different perspectives. He is thinking short term. All he wants to do is get somewhere safe and wait until it’s all over. You force yourself to think, to push your numbness aside, and concentrate on convincing Lee not to do something stupid.
“So let’s stay in the van, let’s get food and water and stay in the van,” you say, trying a different angle, “The van is as safe as anything, and it can move.”
He’s quiet for a few moments, you can see he’s thinking about what you said.
“Okay,” he says, “Okay, yeah.”
“So we need food. Where can we get food?”
“… there’s a newsagent around here. The supermarkets won’t be safe.”
“Yeah. Go there.”
…
As you approach the newsagent, you see a woman walking out the front door. She throws a full bin bag into the back seat of a red car.
“They’re taking the food,” says Lee.
Next to the car stands a man, with both hands firmly gripping a golf club. He’s looking your way as you draw close.

You want to check in the back of the van for possible weapons.
“Wait, slow down. Stop,” you say.
“Hang on, I have an idea,” says Lee, maintaining the same speed.
“What are you doing.” For a horrible moment, you think that Lee is going to the run the guy over.
“Don’t make eye contact with them.”
He drives the van towards the shop. Closing your eyes, you brace yourself against the dashboard. A few seconds pass. You open them again to see that you have passed the newsagent. Now Lee turns a corner and slows the van to a halt.
“Now they think we’re not interested in them,” says Lee.
You’re not completely sure if that’s important, but don’t question it.
“We need weapons, do you have your gardening stuff?” you say.
“Yeah, come on.”
Lee gets out the vehicle, and you follow him, moving to the back doors, which he now opens to reveal an assortment of tools. You're hit by a small wave of panic, and a desperate hope that this won’t be necessary. The idea of killing another person is unbearable.

You pick up the hand axe and wedge it into the elastic of your pyjama bottoms. Then you grab the pitchfork.
Lee doesn’t take anything, he’s already got a kitchen knife. You watch him close up the back of the van, and then follow him around to the front, getting back into the passenger seat, whilst he takes the driver’s position.
“What do we do now?” you say.
He stares into the distance for a few seconds, thinking.
“Two possibilities, they want to share, or they don’t. If they do, don’t let your guard down, if they don’t,” he pauses again, “we can’t really kill them, only in self-defence.”
“Well… I’m just going to run, that’s my self defence.”
He looks at you, scanning your face as if to discover something, you’re not sure what.
“You could stay in the van, so we can make a quick escape. You can drive right?”
“No.”
“No? Ah for fuck’s sake.”
“Well, I can do the basics, I’m sure. I can steer and accelerate, if you leave it in the right gear.”
“No… Listen, you and me will go in together. We can take them.”
“Okay… but we’re gonna talk to them first. Please.”
Lee puts his foot down, and the vehicle moves towards the corner that stands between you and them.
“Just go with your gut,” he says, “and if I say ‘run’, run. If I say ‘attack’, attack.”
You move around the corner and towards the newsagent, but now you can’t see the man or the woman. As you get close you notice that there is a golf club lying on the ground.
The door of the newsagent is still open.

I will try to get the next episode out on Monday!

“Come on,” you say opening the door and getting out the van.
The two of you move towards the shop’s entrance. You hold the pitchfork tightly in your grip, now crossing the threshold.
As you enter, you see the woman standing to your right. She’s completely still, and staring at something on the floor. You can’t see what it is. The view is blocked by a shelf. Now her head snaps in your direction, terror etched upon her.
She shoves both hands into the pockets of her red hoodie. For a second, you think she’s going to pull out a weapon.
“We’re not going to hurt you,” says Lee, “We just want some food.”
She glances back at the floor again, and then takes a few steps forward, hands still in her pockets.
“Can I come with you?” she says, blankly.
“Shh!” says Lee.
You turn to him, and see that he’s listening intently. Your ears strain to pick something out of the silence. You hear footsteps… the sound of someone running.
Lee quickly exits the shop.
“Fuck,” you hear him shout.
You join him as he comes back in and slams the entrance shut. You can’t see what it is. Your view of outside is limited to the glass panel set into the wood of the door.
“Where’s the key?” he shouts.
Your eyes move to the keyhole just underneath the handle.
“Where’s the key?” he shouts again. You turn to ask the woman, and see her running behind the counter, and then into the staff area of the shop and out of sight.
You’re pushed from behind. You stumble and turn to see that it was Lee, who now sits on the floor, and braces himself against the door by pushing his legs against the side of a shelf directly in front of him. A figure slams against the glass. Angry, bloodshot eyes stare at you, as the zombie thuds its dirty palms against the transparent barrier.
“Find the key!” Lee shouts at you, “Find the fucking key!”

You scan the room. The thuds and groans swarm in you. Your thoughts are hitting you all at once, tumbling over each other in useless panic.
But something clicks. An idea hits you.
You run over to the chest freezer and drag it away from the wall.
Now you jump over to the other side, yank out the plug and push. It’s heavy, but adrenaline surges into your arms and legs. Within seconds, you’re there, ramming it against the door.
Lee gets up and helps you make sure the freezer is perfectly placed. For a few moments you both continue to brace yourselves against it. Then Lee slowly lets go, and you hesitantly do the same.
The zombie pounds the glass. But it’s ineffective. The door doesn’t move.

Tip the writer!
If you would like to "tip" me for today’s episode, you can do that by going here and giving me some ANONYMOUS feedback on my writing, or the game in general. Or, as this is the internet, you can just insult my mother… either way it’s anonymous so go nuts: http://www.suggestionox.com/response/...

“Come on,” says Lee, moving towards the staff area.
But you’re thinking about the woman, and wondering what she was staring at.
“Wait!” you say to Lee.
You approach the shelves that currently block your view, now moving around them. You see a man lying on his back, starting at the ceiling with still eyes. His front is covered with blood stains. His throat has been cut. Items from the shelves are littered all around — evidence of a struggle.
You recognise him as the guy with the golf club, “Lee come here.”
Lee comes to your side, “It’s that guy,” he says.
“What ha…” but you trail off as you hear footsteps. You turn to see the woman emerge from the staff area. She’s holding a bunch of keys in one hand, and a kitchen knife in the other. Both the knife and her hand are covered in blood.
She stares at the zombie, pounding its fists against the door, then at you, then back at the zombie.
Now she approaches the door.
“What are you doing?” Lee shouts.
“Locking the door,” she places the key in the lock, wiggles it, then pulls it out. She tries another, and another, until she finds the right one and you hear a clicking sound.
You feel safer knowing that the chest freezer is not the only thing between you and it.
But now you’re thinking about the blood on her hands, and the corpse behind you. She looks at you, and you can see the trauma in her eyes.

“Keep an eye on things down here,” says Lee, leaving for the staff area, “I’m finding a way out.”
You look at the woman. She looks at you.
You watch as she sinks to her knees, then curls up into the foetal position.
“Hey…” you say.
No response.
Her silence worries you, “Hey… Hey talk to me… What’s going on?”
Still no response.
“What’s your name?”
Eventually the woman speaks, “Stacy.”
“Stacy. Come on Stacy. Get up. Please.”
Nothing happens. You continue to call her name, but she remains unresponsive.
You can hear something. A faint sound. A wave of dread takes you. You look at the square pane of glass, at the single zombie framed within it.
A few seconds pass. The noise grows louder and louder, revealing itself as the layered noise of countless groans. It’s more of them…
A numbness floods you. The noise is closer… closer… closer… You back away. Now the glass swarms with their faces, competing with each other to catch a glimpse of you. There’s so many…
Lee comes back into the room. You look at him. He looks at you.
“There’s no way out,” he says.
You stay silent. You’re trapped. Utterly trapped.
END OF CHAPTER 2
Thanks for playing. If you want to play chapter 3 you can add me as a friend on GR’s, and I’ll send an invite to you when chapter 3 starts. I’m not sure exactly which groups I’ll post it to, so this is the best way to keep a look out for the game’s continuation.

“Tell me what you know,” you say to Lee quietly.
“It’s just like the films. If they bite you, you turn into one of them. Fucking zombies,” says Lee, slowing the van and moving it around a tight corner.
“Why?” you say. You’re distantly aware that you’re not sure, exactly, what you want to know, just that you want to know something.
Lee doesn’t answer you.
“Why?” you say again.
“Why, what?”
“Why… why is this happening?”
“I don’t know. Look, we need somewhere to go. Somewhere safe.”
For the first time you realise that Lee is driving without a destination.
Where do you want to go?
