Okay, some years ago I read a PKD novel. It begins in a planned suburb of New York called "Marilyn Monroe." As often happens in a PKD work, there's a survey of the state of the world and its technology. The protagonist gets "homeopapes" (something like a pre-printed blog) from his computer every morning instead of a daily newspaper.
What I remember most is that PKD anticipated Global Warming with a vengeance. North America is so hot that even brief exposure to the sun can maim or kill. EVERYTHING is air-conditioned, even the awning leading from the car to the building. During one power outage a year or two before this story is set, the protagonist lost all his 78 rpm albums -- they melted in the intense heat when his apartment suffered a brief power outage and the residents cowered in the basement until the air-conditioning repair company could rush someone over.
This is probably the first chapter of a novel, but might possibly be from the beginning of a short story.
Can you help me? It's driving me crazy, and not in a creative way! --I hope the form of this request is okay; it's my first time here! - Thanks, Allen Smalling
