I read this book around in 2006. A female working in architecture has a blowout with her hot tempered fiancé who's middle eastern. She needs to move out and finds an add in the paper for a crazy cheap apartment, I think it was in New York. The building is some weird style of architecture where there are no 90 degree angles. Her neighbor across the hall who was an amateur stand up comedian,, who eventually hangs herself, has a broken leg at some point. The architect starts hearing things and finds out some previous tenant went bonkers and drowned her children in the tub while her husbabd was at work and she can hear splashing coming from the bathroom. The whole apartment has a bad past and is full of spirits and they found this woman and placed the add in the paper so she could build a door that they could come through. The woman has a lot of emotional issues as she was raised by a crazy mom, the book talks about flashbacks and hallucinations regarding the crazy mom. Her mom is now living in a home.

That's the most I can remember. I bought the book at the beginning on a vacation and finished it in 2 days. I thought I still had it but don't. I've tried searching keywords online but can't find anything.
