Week 1 - March 26 - April 01
This week's reading covers Chapter 1 - 11
Feel free to post your thoughts here.

Kimberly | 145 comments I'm only at Chapter V, but wanted to say I just loved how Gretchen was as excited about the discovery as her Godfather. :) Harry seems so against the adventure. I bet if it wasn't against the "rules" of the time, Gretchen would have joined them. :)

Kimberly | 145 comments I'm not sure I understand Harry's reluctance to participate in this adventure. Maybe I'm just more adventurous than him. ;) :) Sure, there may be dangers, and one would think his Uncle wouldn't take him into lava, so he shouldn't be so against at least trying. But, that's just me. :)

I agree, it makes no sense. I am guessing it is to give tge story a bit if comic relief. The professor definitely feels like a parody of the absent-minded genius. Reminds me of the professor from Vampire Killers, which is one of my favorite movies.

I am only on chapter 5. I read quite a bit of Verne a long time ago, when I was a kid, and loved it. Not so much now - maybe because the science here is, well, quite contrary to what we know now. Also, no language has 70+ consonants and 50+ vowels. The assumption that the characters are letters boggled my mind. Letter based scripts have 20-30 letters. If it is more, it is syllable or word based. To me that was a bigger snafu then Earth related science, which was in accordance with contemporary science.

Michelle (mich2689) | 263 comments I thought that because of Gretchen's excitement, she was going to convince the professor to bring her along on the adventure. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I guess times were different.
