SOLVED. Novel based on true story of slave ship whose sailors threw slaves overboard. [s]

This book was about a girl on a slave ship. Nearly all of the slaves are sick, and the captain realizes that he'll make more money throwing the sick slaves overboard and collecting the insurance (I think) than by selling them. The first mate (I think) goes down to the hold to do it. When he starts throwing living slaves overboard, all the captives are shocked, but one girl has somehow learned the mate's name and calls him by it, unnerving him. That's as far as I got. I think this was a somewhat older book, maybe from the seventies or eighties. It was rather difficult.
Help would be much appreciated--I really want to read this book.
