Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments I have to mention spoilers since the main part I remember is the ending.

This is an old book, thriller, it involved a girl named Alice who did bad things but that was because somone made her do these thingsa..could have been possession, hypnosis..not sure. There is a guy helping her.

SPOILERS:
In the ending, they are in a car and think they are safe. They THINK they have beaten the bad guys but then the guy helping her becomes aware Alice will not take her foot off the gas petal. He starts to try to stop her but she keeps going faster and faster and winds up killing both herself and the good guy. Does this sound at all familiar to anyone?

Wonderland by Joanna Nadin - D's suggestion

Miss Mara | 156 comments This doesn't seem too much like it, but Bad Alice by Jean Ure?

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Thank You people but I do not think it is either one. In the story I read Alice and the guy involved with her are adults. The story was pure thriller very much in the line of those old 70's and 80's horrors which is what this essentially was. It came out, at the very earliest early 80's most likely earlier then that. The ending is what I vividly remember because these two adults are trying to get away from the bad guys but Alice IS a bad guy, as I said I do not remember if it is hypnosis or possession or a cult but she is under the bad peoples' control.

Beautiful Malice by Rebecca James - Rebecca's suggestion

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments I don't know honestly..I do not think so but I am ordering it because it sounds so good! But I do not think it's the book.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments It maybe the book. Will read it and see if ending matches. Sounds like a good book and sounds strangely familiar so could be. Thanks for the help.

Beautiful Malice was published in 2010, so probably not your book, but it's a fun read.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments I am reading it right now. No it is not the same book but it IS really good.

Miss Mara | 156 comments A bit of a long shot, but The Witchfinder's sister by Beth Underdown? (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31...)

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments No. Not it. But thank you.

To clarify, this is a different request from this one?

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

because they both seem to be horror thrillers involving an Alice.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments This is a different book yes. Two different books, both with an Alice in them. Have not found either one yet but the one I'd most like to find is the one I described above. I'd describe it as a psychological thriller. The other one is more like The Shining, conventional Horror/thriller.

They both just happen to have a character named Alice.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Bren wrote: "It maybe the book. Will read it and see if ending matches. Sounds like a good book and sounds strangely familiar so could be. Thanks for the help."

I read Beautiful Malice today. So good finished in one sitting and it isn't the book but thanks for mentioning it as it was really good.

Miss Mara | 156 comments Alice by Christina Henry maybe? It came out way later than the eighties so it might be a long shot lol. (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23...)

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments No that's not it and doesn't sound like my kind of book either. I read more books like that when I was younger. These days I prefer more psychological horror then that kind of stuff. Thank you for the help. Also the book I read came out, at the very latest, early 80's.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Still trying to find this book. Came out in seventies or early eighties, main female character is Alice, she's under some sort of mind control and there are people trying to rescue her including a guy whose name might be Matt(not sure on that.) I read it a long time ago.

Bren, what kind of bad things happened early in the story (e.g., someone murdered)?

Can you tell us more about the main characters - their jobs, skills/interests, personalities, family/friends, etc.?

Location - country, region, big city/small town?

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Spoiler alert:
Yes people were murdered. I believe Alice was under some type of mind control. I know it was the United States but don't know what state. At the end, she is escaping with the guy who rescued her when she drives them both over a cliff. It reminded me of something Stephen King would write.

I also believe it was a small town or suburb. I know it wasn't a city. I also read this as a kid. I'm trying to track down books I read when I was younger.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5380 comments It's not Black Alice, but that's one of the best books I've ever read.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Hi. I never found this book so bumping it up. Just to go over
..It MAY have been either Koontz or Stephen King.

Read no later then late 70's, early 80's

Thriller/horror

Cult like behavior

Clearly remember main character..Alice

She (Alice) is being mind controlled somehow

Guy rescues her

ENDING SPOILERS:

The ending left me shaken. Guy rescues Alice but she is in a trance like state, guy does not know that and she (Alice) winds up accelerating the car they are in and killing both herself and her rescuer.

Rescuer is frantically telling her to stop the car but she is in a trance..sends them both off the cliff.

MJ | 1617 comments Not a guarantee, but I'm pretty sure I read all of DK's books up until the late 90's maybe early 00's, and this doesn't ring the slightest bell. A lot of them I can look at the cover or hear about them and have at least a basic memory of what it's about, if not remember the full plot. Again, not a guarantee.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments I wish I could remember more. I loved it as a kid.

The whole theme was mind control and I thought remembering the main character's name (Alice) might help.

New info..I am pretty sure this was a best seller. It was originally my dad's book and he was buying alot of the best selling thrillers and mysteries.

message 26: by El (new)

El | 502 comments Maybe something by John Saul? It's been so long since I read those that I couldn't specify which one, unfortunately. But I read him when i went through my own Koontz phase so it's possible.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Thank you but I do not think so. I was a huge Saul fan, read all his books from that time period. Besides his books can be gory in nature sometimes, this was creepy more then gory. But thank you anyway.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments I think the man who rescues her may have been named Matt or Mathew if that helps. Alice had been in a mind controlled cult of some sort.

I looked on google books but cannot find. For some reason I did think it was Dean Koonts but maybe not. Maybe a writer like that who was big at that time.

message 29: by Rosa (new)

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5380 comments I can't find any information about Alice and Me, except that it seems to be about a sniper. That's not it, is it?

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments I cannot find any info on the title "Alice and me" not even on Goodreads. So I cannot say for sure.

I may have to give up on this one. I have been looking for it now for years, even tried google books but cannot find anything remotely like it. Thank you for the help.

message 31: by MJ (new)

MJ | 1617 comments Don't give up. Just come back and bump this thread every few months. I've seen some found after 6 years I think!

Sadly the other day I saw one that had only been up for a year, but I never saw it until then... and I knew exactly what book they were looking for and could have told them a year ago ;)

message 32: by Bryn (new)

Bryn (brynplusplus) | 186 comments Playing with Google books, Alice and Me is about Alice Gordon and a man named Fred, and there seems to be a lot of shooting people and swearing, but no mind control or cult-like stuff.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Thank you but that is not the book. I do not think her name was in the title though I could be wrong on that.

I think it was some mainstream psychological horror writer but I do not know who. I know it is not John Saul as I read all his books from that period.

Thank you for the help.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 324 comments Bumping this one up too as it has been awhile.

I can remember the last scene so vividly..two people i n the car and the female is in a trance or programmed. She hits the gas pedal and sends both herself and the guy in the car with her over a cliff. Here is the info again: Seventies or early eighties horror:

Read no later then late 70's, early 80's

Thriller/horror

Cult like behavior

Clearly remember main character..Alice

She (Alice) is being mind controlled somehow

Guy rescues her

ENDING SPOILERS:

"I have been looking for a horror novel about mind control I read in the late seventies or early eighties. Repeatedly Dean Koontz "Night C hills" has come up on book finder and other places as possibly being the book.

The thing is I did read Night chills and did not think it was the book I am looking for. But I maybe wrong. So for any one who is familiar with Night Chills is there a man who falls in love with a woman? Is her name Alice? and SPOILER:
Do they both die at the end? If so, it is most likely the book. So I guess I am looking for help from anyone who is familiar with Night Chills. Thank you."
