Fishface | 18984 comments Remember when Eclectic at Shelfari asked about music genres that related to crime? Well, I was driving back from a school meeting today, wishing I were in my own car so I could listen to "My Name Is Mud" by Primus, a song about a murder. But I contented myself with the car radio, which played "I Shot The Sheriff" by Eric Clapton -- self-explanatory! -- and "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, which is about a guy facing the death penalty after committing a murder.

LYRICS SELECTIONS:
"I dress in blue-yes navy blue
From head to toe I'm rather drab except my patent shoes
I make 'em shine, well most the time
'Cept today my feet are trodden on by this friend of mine

Six foot two and rude as hell
I got to get him in the ground before he starts to smell
My name is mud"

-- Primus

"I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy

All around in my home town
They're trying to track me down
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy
For the life of a deputy, but I say

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense
I shot the sheriff, and they say it is a capital offense"

-- Eric Clapton

"Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away"

-- Queen

I also have, on a Dead Kennedys disc in my glove box, "Police Truck," and I'm not going to post those lyrics because of Bel's rule about language.

Does anyone else have any favorite songs about crimes?

message 2: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 1225 comments I love "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix.

"Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun of yours?
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Oh, I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
And that ain't too cool
Huh, hey Joe, I heard you shot your mamma down
You shot her down now
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your lady down
You shot her down in the ground, yeah
Yeah
Yes, I did, I shot her
..."

Shelley | 1225 comments I love "How Long Will They Mourn Me?" by Tupac. Can't post the lyrics here ... language issue. :)

Folsum Prison Blues "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die"

Also (historically inaccurate) Ballad of Billy the Kid

Shelley | 1225 comments Snippet from "How Long Will They Mourn Me?" by Tupac that is okay to post here. Not easy to find. LOL

"It's kinda hard to be optimistic
When your homie's lyin' dead on the pavement twisted"

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments I thought we had a thread about this - I started by mentioning 'The Way' (Fastball), which isn't really about a crime, but about a disappearance (true story).

There are tons - many going back generations.

On the Bluegrass front, 'Omie Wise', as done by Roscoe Holcomb:

Gotta speak Kentucky to understand it, but it's basically about a woman who was drowned by her lover.

Then of course there's Tom Dooley!

Lyrics
Well I caught my wife with another man
And it cost me ninety nine
On a prison farm in Georgia
Close to the Florida line
Well I'd been here for two long years
I finally made the warden my friend
And so he sentenced me to a life of ease
Taking care of Ol Red
Now Ol' Red he's the damnedest dog that I've ever seen
Got a nose that can smell a two day trail
He's a four legged tracking machine
You can consider yourself mighty lucky
To get past the gators and the quicksand beds
But all these years that I've been here
Ain't nobody got past Red
And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes
Well I paid off the guard and I slipped out a letter
To my cousin up in Tennessee
Oh and he brought down a blue tick hound
She was pretty as she could be
Well they penned her up in the swampland
'Bout a mile just south of the gate
And I'd take Ol' Red for his evening run
I'd just drop him off and wait
And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes
Now Ol' Red got real used to seeing
His lady every night
And so I kept him away for three or four days
And waited till the time got right
Well I made my run with the evenin' sun
And I smiled when I heard 'em let Red out
'Cause I was headed north to Tennessee
And Ol' Red was headed south
And the warden sang
Come on somebody
Why don't you run
Ol' Red's itchin' to have a little fun
Get my lantern
Get my gun
Red'll have you treed before the mornin' comes
Now there's red haired blue ticks all in the South
Love got me in here and love got me out

Fishface | 18984 comments Iggy Pop and David Bowie end their song "Play It Safe" with the non-heroic couplet:

"I wanna be a criminal...
Movin' and groovin' with the Son of Sam
Splish splash I was Jim Jones..."

message 10: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments O course there's 'I don't like Mondays' by the Boomtown Rats and 'Pumped Up Kicks' by Foster the People, both about school shootings, and both rather catchy!

message 11: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18984 comments And, of course, "I Don't Like Mondays" is based on a true school shooting!

message 12: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments Right - that's the big difference between the two. IDLM was based on Brenda Spencer and her supposed comment when asked why she did it. PUK is an imaginary - and frankly kind of ridiculous - school shooting event.

message 13: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18984 comments Well, I heard a radio interview with Mark Foster, whose band recorded "Pumped Up Kicks," and he pointed out that the kid in the song was just fantasizing about how everyone at school would scatter like bowling pins if he pulled a gun on them. "It's almost, kind of, you know, dark," he gushed.

Fishface | 18984 comments There's always "Hazard," playing right now on supermarket PA systems all over the country:

"No one understood what I felt for Mary
No one cared until the night she went out walking alone
And never came home
Man with a badge came knocking next morning
Here was I surrounded by a thousand fingers suddenly
Pointed right at me
I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town"

Jay (mrisolatedalienated) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOQhG...
Song about Ted Bundy.

My favorite lyrics

"Republican killer liked to be in control. Threw away his potential for the devil's soul."
"Who did he kill? Who did he slaughter? Maybe your mother, sister, or daughter."

Here are two songs about Marc Lepine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLLBC...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLqLq...
This second song is my favorite song about the massacre.
My favorite lyrics are

"Later on that eve. Turn on my TV. Listen as they're talking about the news of the shooting spree. 14 young women shot dead in Montreal. Oh, it's a killing of us all."

"Could of been me. Just as easily. Could of been my lover. Left there to bleed. Oh it could of been my father, or my brother done the deed."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH98A...
Song about Columbine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AlkB...
Song about O.J Simpson. Very funny song and actually a good song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHf21...
I am not into terrorist but this is a great song and I love the lyrics.

Favorite lyric "You never heard the sirens rushing to the scene. You were wearing ear plugs. You never heard the screams."

John Wayne Gacy is one of my all time favorite serial killer cases.
I own 3 books on the case including a rare obscure one. I own 5 documentaries on him and 2 true crime episodes looking at the case from his sister Karen's view.

I am glad that the killer's family members are now being accepted at victims as well.
People always judge and toss those victims under the bus. Now it's more acceptable to give them their rightful place as another victim of the crimes.

I got a documentary about Marc Lepine and it mentions how the massacre completely destroyed his sister who was popular and successful. Unlike him.

The documentary talks about how after the massacre she became a hardcore drug addict and died from a drug overdose in a sleazy hotel. In the host's words "Died in a junkie's pad."

They show an interview with an investigator and he said "it looked like a young person who had been destroyed by drugs."

Great song about Gacy.

Favorite lyrics

"As I breeze through this windy city. The devil now rides on my back and all them boys here look mighty pretty. I need a fix and oh lord I need it fast."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVIwB...
Another great song about Gacy.

My favorite lyrics are
"Neighbors. They adored him for his humor and conversation."

"Twenty seven people. Even more; they were boys. With their cars, summer jobs."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpcoj...
Great song about Kenneth Biachi and Angelo Buono.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ7tu...
Another great song about them but a metal song.

Another song not about a serial killer but still a very important song because of the subject matter.
More people should be aware of this massacre.

The best song I know of about Andrei Chikatilo.

Want an authentic old school song?

Song about serial killer Harry Powers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c-gR...
Song about my favorite mall shooting case. Robert Hawkins on December 5th was fired from Mcdonalds, ruined his relationship with his girlfriend and was living in his vehicle. So he decided to go to a mall and shoot at holiday shoppers.

One of my favorite songs about a true crime case as well.

Part of suicide note by Robert Hawkins
"I'm so sorry for what I've put you through I never meant to hurt all of you so much and I don't blame any one of you for disowning me I just can't be a burden to you and my friends any longer You are all better off without me. I'm so sorry for this.

I've just snapped I can't take this meaningless existence anymore I've been a constant disappointment and that trend would have only continued. just remember the good times we had together."

Fishface | 18984 comments I just stumbled across the fact that the late, lamented Dead Milkmen wrote a song that references the horrid Vincent Chin murder, called "Anthropology Days."

Lyrical linkage (avert your eyes, those who cannot tolerate foul language!): https://genius.com/The-dead-milkmen-a...

But wait! There's more! The same album where you can hear that song, PRETTY MUSIC FOR PRETTY PEOPLE, also has songs called "Mary Ann Cotton (The Poisoner's Song)," "Ronald Reagan Killed The Black Dahlia," and "The Boston Molasses Flood," all about once-well-known homicide cases.
