SOLVED. Slightly dark fantasy novel with little illustrations of strange creatures. [s]

I read this fantasy novel (or may have been a series) a couple of years ago around 2014 and I seem to have forgotten its name. I remember there to be a young girl who somehow got transported to an alternate world (maybe through a tower??) where there is magic and really strange creatures. The whole book had illustrations of these creatures that were really creepy. I also remember that there were different realms or regions or islands in this fantasy world and each had a specific niche about them. One of them was a dark realm and the main antagonist was this king or lord of some sort who was stitched together like a puppet. The main character also had a companion. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know anything about this book?
