It is a children's book, read it in the early 2000's.

It was about a boy who stumbles onto a sorcerer, who then enslaves him, while the boy tries to learn magic from the sorcerer's book.
The boy also befriends two monsters, one was a dog made of stone.
The monsters then try to rescue the boy maybe?
Never got to the end, and can't remember anything else, read it in junior school more than 10 years ago, but want to read it again.

Is it Melleron's Magic or Melleron's Monsters by Douglas Arthur Hill? The descriptions aren't great...but the boy has a small pink dragon and a stone dog as companions and they escape from a Magician named Saelenz.
