I prefer paper books but enjoy listening to audio books on trips and during my daily commute. Science fiction is my favorite genre and dystopian science fiction my favorite sub-genre. I love all things science and read a few science magazines and skeptic magazines in addition to books.
I enjoy the Reading Envy podcast and checking out what my Goodreads friends are reading.

I have been a reader since I was a kid thanks to my older brother who always encouraged me to read. I enjoy literary fiction, historical fiction and I dip into non-fiction also.
My reading life is often interrupted with grading (I teach high school juniors) and my busy schedule (I have two girls and a house of dogs).
I look forward to reading Steinbeck with all of you.
Hi, I'm Sara. I am currently located in West Palm Beach, FL, but dream often of moving to North Carolina (or maybe Switzerland).
I homeschool my two daughters (8 & 6) and read like it's my job. I don't get paid for either.
I don't know if I have a reading "type", but I'm usually more drawn to depth than entertainment value. I am excited to read and discuss with everyone!

I was an avid reader until I started college and then rekindled my love a couple years after graduating. Now, though, that I no longer have babies or toddlers running around, I have really kicked my love into high gear. I feel like I have so many books to catch up on! I have been intermingling classics, non-fiction, and pretty much any type of fiction if the premise is good.
I always have an audiobook going as well as 1-2 print books going. East of Eden has been on my shelf for a bit. I gave up on Grapes of Wrath, but have high hopes and look forward to the 1st read along.

I had to read Grapes of Wrath in 9th grade, and I can't imagine a worse book to assign to 15 year olds - all I remember is that it was grim and depressing - if I wasn't already a voracious reader it would have soured me on books. I'll try and pep talk myself into trying East of Eden, but it might not happen......

Hi Nadine! I'm an academic librarian too, woohoo. I'm glad you're here whether or not you read along.

The self-appointed Major Domo of my neighborhood dog park is a Boston Terrier named Molly. They must be obeyed! Welcome Suellen!

I'm Robin from Sacramento, California, and am also an academic librarian. I've had a life long love of reading and read mostly fiction. However, Audible has definitely increased my non-fiction "reading" - perfect for the commute to work. I'm also a book podcast junkie and enjoy the Reading Envy podcast. I've read Steinbeck over the years, but have never tackled East of Eden. I'm game for giving it a try.

Hi Kim! Nice to have you hear, and I'm glad you're back into reading. :)

Sometimes I wonder if we don't develop distastes of authors from simply reading them at the wrong time. (But welcome!)

Hi Robin, welcome! Audible has changed some things for me too. Academic librarians unite!
Also hi Jeff, Elizabeth, Sara - one previous RE guest and two upcoming!

I have been a reader all of my life, but I haven't been able to read very much for pleasure for the last few years since I have been in school. I will be graduating with my degree in archiving/library science in May, so this will be something to look forward to after I finish my school work!
I read the Grapes of Wrath in high school and loved it (I think I read it twice), but I haven't read very many of Steinbeck's other books. I'm excited to get started!

Hi Marian! I think the good news is that I feel like I see archival jobs all the time in library listings. I hope you find something great. Glad you're here!

Picked up my first book - Charlotte's Web- at 4. Read the entire book to myself and have not stopped since:)
Mom of 5 with 3 dogs! Life is full, but I make time for reading daily!
Love most genres--and all formats. Could not travel wo my Kindle- but love a real book most of all.

I'm Carol Ann from Southeast Idaho. And yes, I'm totally a potato lovin' gal. Baked, fried, mashed, you name it. I love them! : )
I have always loved reading but did't keep up with adult books while raising my kids and then when they were a bit older I went back to college and worked full-time. I graduated a few years ago and now am an empty-nester, so here I am passionately trying to catch up on all the books I've missed and re-learn how to read simply for pleasure! I'm not a fast reader but I enjoy most genres and love the excitement that comes from learning new things and experiencing new places via books. I especially enjoy great conversations with other book lovers.
I'm thrilled to be part of the group and to join in on the read-along.

Like most of the people here, I've been a voracious reader as long as I can recall. I especially love science fiction, fantasy, and mysteries. I also love rereading, which makes me an opposite from Jenny since she is so busy reading every nominated book from prestigious lists that she doesn't have time for rereading. :-)
True to form, this will be my third reading of East of Eden when this gang gets going. I'm looking forward to it!

I absolutely love Jenny's podcast and I listen to each episode . She is one smart cookie! I have read all of Steinbeck so I may put up a list of some others to think about for later . I taught most each Steinbeck novel in school. Out of each novel , my students loved Of Mice and Men the most . We could have had conversations for days on that book. East of Eden bothered me too. My Daddy still can't get over The Grapes of Wrath !
I was a very shy , quiet child and I read very early . Books have always been my friends, my comforters, my places to find out about different points of view in people and how to get along with others . I was bullied for being very skinny and scrappy looking as a kid . You know the little girls that were so tiny that their tights hung low and they looked bunched up like elephant legs. I also never had a beauty shop hair cut. My Mom always cut it and it was ugly. So , I tried really hard to be just as nice as I could and kind and sincere . I never said anything unless someone asked. If they picked on me , the teacher would sometimes let me read at recess. I just kept reading to find the light to get me through the dark.
After school you may think you do not have to learn anymore , but that is when the real education begins . It is so exciting to choose your own books and to share them with others . Please forgive me if I get passionate about a book . I do not mean to intentionally step on anyone's toes. Just tell me to be quiet and give me your side . We all get caught up in book discussions and in life discussions like that . I respect everyone's opinion . Please no that right off and tell me straight up if I am not looking at every point of view . Books teach us all sides of every story . Everyone has a story . Not everyone is all good or all bad . We are only human and not perfect . Books teach us how to work better with each other . Sincerely, Dawn

Melissa

I have been promising a friend that I would read East of Eden and I happened to see a post on Litsy (username Daisey) about a readalong with this group, so it seemed the perfect opportunity. Looking forward to the discussion with this group!

I'm a fan of the Reading Envy Podcast, though admittedly I'm fearfully behind in episodes. Sometimes I wish I could freeze time just so I could do all the things that need doing, but then I think perhaps I ought invest in prioritizing, and then I just think that rather than being so darn practical, I should just move to an island in the Atlantic and be happy, and grow old, and eat and drink and read good things as waves crash and foam the shingle.
I'll apologize now for not being nearly as present as I'd like :)
Hi Dawn, Melissa, Daisey, sorry I missed your posts initially.
And hi Casey! Nice to see you here. :)
And hi Casey! Nice to see you here. :)

I will try to read along with the chosen books but can't commit to posting about them as I travel a fair bit and am not always online. I know a fair few of the group members here already, some from GR and others from Litsy (@AceOnRoam). I know I don't sound like a good fit for the group but I promise to try to participate where I can :)
I'm an x librarian from way back… but I have spent most of my career in IT software support and test management.

I am Anne in Austin. I came late to the podcast but I love it and am catching up. I think Jenny's recommendations are very appealing and interesting and I love all the different guests and their individual voices and perspectives.
I have been a life-long avid reader and maintain at 100-150 books per year. There is no specific genre for me--contemporary, mystery, thriller, memoir, science, narrative nonfiction, some history, a little science fiction and even occasionally some fantasy. I've been introduced to some great books and authors (I'm definitely on the A Little Life team) by following The Tournament of Books for the last several years.
I am so lucky to work with libraries and librarians of all kinds. I am in two f2f bookclubs and sometimes read with groups on Goodreads. I'm really good at reading along but sometimes a bit shy about posting.

My name is Jenny and I'm the host/producer of the Reading Envy podcast, but really I just have a podcast to talk even more about books. Because reading is my greatest love. I'm glad to know you!
