Leanne Ingram | 7 comments This is likely a YA book, and not knowing is driving me nuts!

So basically there is a boy and he was with his father at what I think was either a lumber or fishing camp. He gets kidnapped by native Americans to replace a family's dead son, whom you later learn was killed either by the boy or his relation (I forget) by clubbing him to death. Anyways so the boy wants to leave so he escapes only to find his father has moved on with the rest of the camp. So the natives find him again and he lives with them, unhappily. He falls in love with a girl, but she is the sister of the dead son and she doesnt like him because he is the replacement. In the end he runs away again, only to almost die of starvation before being found once more by the natives. He accepts that this is his new home and finds another girl to crush on. The end.

Also he was carving a comb for his love interest, and I think that might have something to do with the title. A comb with a wolf on the end.

Does this ring any bells?

Leanne Ingram | 7 comments Im not sure. I read it around 2006, but it was probably older than that.

How did you find the book Leanne--did someone recommend it to you, you saw a review, the cover or back blurb grabbed your attention, there was a teaser bit in the back of another book???

I remember that the cover and especially the title stood out in the school library. And the teaser was good too, I had been reading similar material at the time so I picked it up.

Diana Welsch | 530 comments Oddly, I actually solved a query where the answer was The Dream Carvers a few months ago, but they remembered different details, such as that the kid was a viking and that the story took place in Newfoundland, so I didn't recognize it this time!

Thanks Diana! Yeah it's funny the weird and random details people remember. I had no idea this was in Newfoundland and Greenland, let alone there were vikings.
