SOLVED. Sci-fi / fantasy series from the 90s about a girl who dies but her ghost is still around [s]

I remember reading this series sometime around 1998. All I vaguely remember is that a teenage girl dies and her ghost is still present in her hometown, etc. I feel like there was something interplanetary involved too. I also remember that each book in the series was told in alternating sections, but don't remember why. Hope someone can make sense of this!
