I grew up visiting the real Ivan the Gorilla at the B&I in Tacoma Washington. I loved him and would happily sit for hours as my grandparents shopped. When I grew up and moved away I always made a point of keeping up with Ivan's life and was heartbroken when he was unable to "make friends" when moved to the zoo. I literally cried the day he died.
He was a huge part of my childhood and meant so much to me. This book may have been fiction, but enough realism to hurt as you read it.
I think this book is sad because Stella died and Ruby is just a baby elephant when she started working on a circus.
I bought this book through scholastic to read with my daughter. She is six, and every night we read before bed. I was getting tired of reading the same 3-5 minute stories every night, and thought this would be a great introduction to multi- chapter books. We both loved this book and have not stopped talking about it six months later. I have had my husband read it and two of our grown up friends have read it on my recommendation. Every person I have pimped this book to has read it and loved it, no matter their age. I was a little concerned at some of the heartbreaking chapters of this book, I didn't want to traumatize my 6 year old. She actually did better than me. I cried openly in some parts, she did not. She did ask a tone of questions that were sometimes hard to answer, but we got through it.
All in all we LOVE this fantastic and at times heartbreaking story.
I thought it was great! I didn't think it was too too sad, but i read a lot of sad books. I do think the end was pretty sad and a bunch of other parts too. But i didn't think it was so sad to cry about. [laura]
I loved loved loved this book even though it was sad. Beyond sweet and can't wait to read the sequel.
