When I grew up and moved away I always made a point of keeping up with Ivan's life and was heartbroken when he was unable to "make friends" when moved to the zoo. I literally cried the day he died.
He was a huge part of my childhood and meant so much to me. This book may have been fiction, but enough realism to hurt as you read it.

I was a little concerned at some of the heartbreaking chapters of this book, I didn't want to traumatize my 6 year old. She actually did better than me. I cried openly in some parts, she did not. She did ask a tone of questions that were sometimes hard to answer, but we got through it.
All in all we LOVE this fantastic and at times heartbreaking story.
