Dark books about children with superpowers

Not what I'm looking for but I have wanted to read Carrie for a few years now. I don't know a lot about Firestarter, though I'm sure it's good as well.

Stephen King does like to use strange powerful kids in his books.

The Girl with the Silver Eyes and by William Sleator, Into the Dream. Though these kids don't know why they are different until they discover why.
The first Harry Potter - he is discovering his powers and his happy to be going to Hogwarts until he learns why wizards want to kill him.

It's teens, though. Do they count as children?

I want to read a book dealing with children protagonists. They should have some sort of power or magic and I'd prefer if it's darker with themes mostly presented in books for adults (except for sex, obviously. Ick.)
I'm going to be more slack with what I actually want plotwise but the lowdown is that it should start light, with the typical superhero mindset, then become serious to a point where the protagonists realize they might be over their head.
Oddly enough, I wanted to read a plot like this after watching a children's show of all things with my little sister. The things that come from nothing, I tell ya.
