Zakle | 104 comments This might be a bit too specific and I'm not placing a lot of expectation on finding a book exactly like what I'm searching for.

I want to read a book dealing with children protagonists. They should have some sort of power or magic and I'd prefer if it's darker with themes mostly presented in books for adults (except for sex, obviously. Ick.)

I'm going to be more slack with what I actually want plotwise but the lowdown is that it should start light, with the typical superhero mindset, then become serious to a point where the protagonists realize they might be over their head.

Oddly enough, I wanted to read a plot like this after watching a children's show of all things with my little sister. The things that come from nothing, I tell ya.

Not what I'm looking for but I have wanted to read Carrie for a few years now. I don't know a lot about Firestarter, though I'm sure it's good as well.

Hillary | 270 comments The Shining features Danny and his powers, doesn't exactly start "light" except that the family things that caring for the Overlook Hotel will give them a fresh start. Then, well, not so much.

Stephen King does like to use strange powerful kids in his books.

Hillary | 270 comments Books for kids - Down a Dark Hall is about a girl who thinks she got into an exclusive boarding school, then discovers why she did.
The Girl with the Silver Eyes and by William Sleator, Into the Dream. Though these kids don't know why they are different until they discover why.
The first Harry Potter - he is discovering his powers and his happy to be going to Hogwarts until he learns why wizards want to kill him.

Shanna_redwind | 852 comments It's not a book, but I think the movie Chronicle might be exactly what you're looking for.

It's teens, though. Do they count as children?
