It's not jack of hearts from "the novel of seven courts" series. I'm not 100% sure about the details, but I think the protagonist was a prince who was heartbroken, so he wandered through a forest and allowed a witch to take his heart from him.

In the Forests of Serre

It's been a bit since I read In the Forests of Serre but I feel like the prince just wanders away from the palace under a spell and gets his heart stolen. He was heartbroken because his wife and child died and he's supposed to be remarrying rather suddenly to maintain the succession but isn't willing so he wanders off.
