I read this book as assigned reading in middle school, some time around 2001. It's set in a kind of dystopian society where everyone is assigned a job after high school. It's possible to not be assigned a job at all which is the most terrifying option. The main character is a female. Her best friend is essentially safe from this sorting because her family owns a farm that she will work on with her many siblings.

I wish I could remember more details about this book, I know this isn't much to go on. I just remember loving this book and it's been driving me crazy for years.
