SOLVED. Illustrated/picture book about a prince who is vain gets cursed [s]

I read this book some time before the year 2000. I think it was an original story and not a retelling or an older story, but I'm not sure.

It featured a prince, who I think was the most handsome prince in the world, and he only wanted to marry the most beautiful princess, but he was really nit-picky and would always find a flaw in the princesses. Eventually he gets cursed/ banished. I think he gets banished to the woods with a woman who owns a big dog or a wolf. For a year and a day, he lives in the woods, and when he goes back, he ends up marrying the woman (who may have been a secret princess?).

It was really beautifully illustrated in hard cover.

That's not it. It definitely had a more sophisticated/realistic art style. Also the Prince was not cursed to sleep.
