#352 - One of the editions had a different date in the title, so I did not combine, but they are all on the same profile now.

Helene (helenecolin) | 28 comments Hi all,

Could it be possible to have the following 3 books displayed as being the same book but in different editions (namely original Swedish version, US version, UK version):

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

The Swedish version has the German versions listed under but not the two English ones above.

Thanks so much in advance.

#372 done, checked that the USA and GB books have different titles

lethe | 16359 comments #375 This is more complicated than a simple combining. One has Max Unterwasser as the author (also in Worldcat), the other Miloš Urban (Мілош Урбан). Are they two different people, or the same person?

lethe | 16359 comments #376 Merging a duplicate edition first.

... and combined.

lethe | 16359 comments Re #375, 377: another librarian combined them in the meantime (it would be very nice if they had actually said so here! There is a whole thread about how annoying it is if people don't mark posts 'done').

It appears that Max Unterwasser is indeed a pseudonym.

ETA And actually, since it was first published under Max Unterwasser, shouldn't that be the primary author name on all editions?

I was about to write here that I started working on #375 before your comment, but I noticed your 1st comment after combining, so I checked again and was going to ask you if I must separate them again
Sorry for my late reply

lethe | 16359 comments Thanks, Ismail :) No problem. You usually leave comments, as far as I can tell.

But now I'm wondering whether Max Unterwasser should be the primary author name on all editions, since that is the name the book was first published under.

I had found this on the publisher's website:
"autor Miloš Urban váhal před lety podepsat, a proto ji vydal pod pseudonymem Max Unterwasser."
Which according to Google Translate means "The author, Miloš Urban, hesitated to sign a few years ago, and therefore gave it under the pseudonym Max Unterwasser."

message 381: by Ismail (new)

Ismail | 2202 comments Thanks lethe

Before I started working on it, the primary author was Max Unterwasser, I moved it to second author for combining and was going to move it back to primary.
I think now you can say the proper thing to be done

message 382: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16359 comments I'm not sure in this case. It is extra complicated due to the different spellings of his real name. I would like a second (third) opinion on this.

message 383: by ☕ Lachgas ♿ (new)

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments I think I would go with Unterwasser as primary - if that is the name first published under (do not see the need for thinking about exeption ... and don't think there are some made on GR) and as secondary I'd choose the name as on the cover

lethe | 16359 comments Lachgas wrote: "do not see the need for thinking about exeption ... and don't think there are some made on GR"

For example the Brontës and Sylvia Plath published their works under a pseudonym first. Not to forget Daniel Defoe with Robinson Crusoë ;-) Yet on Goodreads they appear with their own name as primary.

I would like to know where the line is drawn. Why does the rule apply to some books and authors, but not to others?

(I posted about this last year in the Policies & Practices folder, but got very unsatisfactory answers from staff: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...)

Alicia Kobishop (aliciakobishop) | 9 comments Hi!

Would it be possible to combine these:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... (ebook, old cover)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... (paperback, new cover)

Thank you!
~Alicia

Kelly (gisacuppa) | 47 comments Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to use but I have noticed that some of the new AmazonClassics books I have downloaded and added to goodreads via the 'add your Amazon purchases' link have been shelved as a different book entirely to the original book record.

The Awakening by Kate Chopin

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... (the new AmazonClassics edition)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... (the original record with multiple editions)

I also noticed this is the case with Walden by Henry David Thoreau

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... (AmazonClassics)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... (the original record)

I'm unsure of how many of the other AmazonClassics editions have been added as seperate books instead of combined as editions.

Apologies if this is the wrong thread, but I'm very new to this!

Thanks in advance :)

message 390: by Ismail (new)

Ismail | 2202 comments #390 both combined
I made a search by title on AmazonClassics and didn't find an other books need combining
please if there are more books with this issue feel free to post it here

Kelly (gisacuppa) | 47 comments Thank you so much :)

Othello:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

The Jungle:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Theres also Paradise Lost:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

However the AmazonClassics edition doesn't have a cover. The cover is shown on the Amazon page https://www.amazon.co.uk/Paradise-Los...

Apologies again if this is the wrong thread for the cover being absent from the listing.

Thanks again for your help!

Kelly (gisacuppa) | 47 comments I'm not sure if this counts, but the AmazonClassics edition of Beowulf is combined with 12 editions, but it is still separate from the original listing. I'm unsure if it has something to do with the fact that it lists the author as Anonymous, whereas the original lists it as Unknown.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

Same goes for Romeo and Juliet:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Thanks again :)

message 397: by Ismail (new)

Ismail | 2202 comments #396 the two editions of the book combined
But the series seem to me that they don't need combining, I think that every book of the series has two volumes, so volume 1 has a series and vol. 2 has an other series
But I'm not sure

#397 you are welcome
