What Is The Purpose Of Having A Black Bachelorette?

Why do you think she won't choose a white guy? She seems to be attracted to them, otherwise she wouldn't have participated in the previous bachelor round right? Or am I wrong? Do the women just sign up without knowing who the guy is? I've never watched the show.
I am not familiar with the franchise but I support anything that shows black women as desirable, successful and strong. Let's own our narrative, even on a silly dating show!

Let's own our narrative, even on a silly dating show!"I agree with Erin, black women need this type of image (desirability/femininity) put out in the media to phase out years of being stereotyped as ghetto and masculine, and at this point anything is better than that. I've watched a few seasons and it seems that the bachelors/bachelorettes do have some say in who they want in the finals, not saying that the show doesn't have some rigging elements, but I think do have a say.
I'm fairly positive that she will pick a non-black guy. The network won't want The Bachelor to seem like it has turned into a "black show." There are very few full black couples on television and I believe it's that way to make white viewers feel more comfortable. I just hope they don't turn her into a stereotype. I don't care who she ultimately picks but it would be nice to have a fair mix of black, white, Hispanics, and Asian men.

Hi Arch,Those are some good questions that you brought up, but unfortunately those can only be answered accurately by the two parties involved. From interviews that Rachel has given it seems like she was looking for something serious and long-term my link text and maybe Nick isn't at that point yet so that could be why she was eliminated, that's just my guess. Also, with your first question I think you mean Nick, Andi was the prior bachelorette, but the question is posed in a way that comes off as if something is wrong with Rachel and is ultimately why she wasn't picked and that's not necessarily true, both of them have stated that they had chemistry, but maybe he had a deeper connection with one of the other ladies. Also, let's look at the race aspect in it, not everyone one is courageous enough to take that on because it does generate a lot backlash so I'm pretty sure that may have played a part in the elimination as well enough though it's not mentioned or insinuated it's a logical conclusion.
Overall, maybe it's best that he didn't pick her because he looks like one of those guys who may have some issues and it seems like she's moved on and is ready to find a man that's right for her which as a black women she deserves. She has mentioned that she is open-minded to meeting all types of men and that she has dated both black and white men so she's not limiting herself to just black....I guess we'll just have to stay tuned for the premiere to see what type of men are brought in.
I'm just happy that a black woman is going to be able to go on a public platform such as the bachelorette and will hopefully set a great example for other black women that are interested in expanding their dating pool as well. Her being open to the idea and going on this show says that it's okay for black women to be interested in something different. Plus, she will be the prize for the men to prove their worthiness so it'll be nice to see that a black woman is worth competing for publicly for a change.

Rachel was on Ellen show Friday, I didn't watch it, I just found out about it. She stated that she was shocked and heartbroken that Nick eliminated her, which happened 3 months ago. She felt they had a strong connection. She said that she guessed that he was looking for something else. In the interview she also made it known that she's a sucker for a great smile, that she's looking for a man that can make her laugh, knows what he wants, that's ambitious, ready to start a family and ready to get married. I have to wonder if she decided this is what she wanted in a man after being eliminated or if this is how she always felt. After all, she did refer herself as Nick's loss. There is no way that they connected and not wanted the same thing. I wonder by any chance that Nick told Rachel that he wanted children and was ready to get married.
Rachel's season will start in March. I will not watch it, but I do want to see the men that will be competing for her. I strongly believe there will be a huge percentage of black men on the show and Rachel will pick a black man.

With that being said, it rubbed the wrong way how you kept commenting on how a woman should act like this & how a woman should not want that & how XYZ would definitely happen & ZYX would never happen. We live in the 21st century, where women have the right to choose who, what, where & why they want to be. We've spent centuries upon centuries be oppressed by men, being told what we should want out of life & it's disheartening in 2017 to see a woman eagerly pick up the chains our sex worked so hard to break free from. Maybe Rachel WILL pick a black man. Or maybe she won't. Maybe she's okay with being a "buffet" as you call it. Maybe she'd rather be a reality star than "keep her day job", as you say. Whatever it is, you nor anyone else has to right to tell her or any other woman or man what they should or should not want/be.
I think it's important and historic and just simply a long time coming for a woman of color to be featured as the bachelorette. This is a really BIG deal. Though, I haven't watched this show in years I will definitely watch Rachel's season and I encourage everyone to support her -- even if you just turn to ABC and walk away.I don't know Rachel and never heard of her prior to reading the article I posted about her in another thread. It will be important for Rachel to have better than good ratings -- otherwise, Rachel will be held as a test case that was tried and failed.
Why? Because viewership was down for her season. Why? Because no one watched, because no one wanted to see a black woman find her Prince Charming. I don't want to give ABC that excuse or prove them right "if" this is how they're looking at her season. There always has to be a "first" one, and Rachel if successful is blazing a path for future women of color being selected as the bachelorette.
Now ... on to the men. I'm not sure how the process works but I'm sure ABC will ask her what type of men, background and their ethnicity she'd be interested in dating and have vying for her attention.
I feel that this will be a racially diverse cast and that we can expect to find black, white, Asian, African, East Indian, Native American, Hispanic, bi-racial -- in other words, a full smorgasbord in her dating pool.
Who Rachel chooses will come down to chemistry. "If" Rachel chooses a black man I won't assume that she was required to but more that it's where her heart led her. That he had all the right ingredients she looks for in a potential life partner. If the man she chooses is white, Asian or Hispanic or any other ethnicity I will make the same assumption. The fun will be in seeing how it all plays out.
Let's make history and watch. :-)
I haven't watched the Bachelor since like the second season it was on. And have never watched a Bachelorette season. But I do follow tv and pop culture and one thing I do know is that traditionally the bachelorette is chosen from one of the women who made it very far in the Bachelor but didn't get picked. And also she tests positively with the audience. If Rachel was both those things and wasn't picked then that would raise more questions.
In fact, there has been a groundswell of criticism about the lack of any POC main Bach/s in that has gotten louder over the years. Since the new president of ABC is a black woman and her biggest money maker on her network is a black woman, maybe she felt she had the audience to support a black bachelorette and now was the time.

I watched the first couple of seasons of the Bachelor, but stopped after realizing these relationships usually break up soon after. I doubt I will watch this either. In the beginning I was swept up with the advertised romance of it all, but now recognize it's kind of a joke. No one is going on that show for love, maybe in the course of reality starring, it might accidentally happen every once in awhile. I do like the idea of the Bachelorette better though. I much rather watch guys fighting over a woman, than women fighting over a dude. Especially since most of the recent Bachelors aren't even all that.

It's a reason why Rachel lasted long on this season of the bachelor and I believe it's because the franchise wanted to be fair to the black race and give them a show, where a black person will be the lead. The black woman is never picked by the white man on this show. The black man is never picked by the white woman on the bachelorette. It's always white with white.
If Rachel so happen to pick a white man, they will quickly break up after the show.
I will wait patiently to see who the fans of the show on here states she picked, when her show comes to an end. I might find out on ET before it's stated on here.

Lust is."Of course, there are exceptions, (the first bachelorette, Trista did want to find love and she was successful) but too many people (not everybody) are caught up in wanting to be famous. They want a taste of what it's like to live the celebrity (though a minor variation) lifestyle with the money, adoration, fame or notoriety. I'm sure they have people in their ear telling them that they can write their own ticket and make xx amount of dollars. The fame -- especially Reality TV fame doesn't last long so there is just a small window of opportunity.

Sometimes, absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder especially if you have doubts about the viability/longevity of the relationship in the first place or you meet someone in real life while you're separated from 'The One.'

Back to my question: What Is the purpose of having a black bachelorette? I am not afraid to stand corrected, but there is no way that Rachel is going to wind up with a white man or another non-black man. The guy that she will choose will be black. 98% to 99% of the guys that she will have to choose from will be black and they will have 1 or 2 white men on the show, but they will get eliminated quick. If a white man makes it to the finale episode, he will not be picked. The black guy will be picked.
If the people that's behind the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise wanted Rachel to be with a white guy, they would have let her win this season, but instead of doing that, they have announced that she will be the first black bachelorette, before the finale. They knew that Nick wasn't going to be picking Rachel from day one and so did she.
I believe the show is rigged. The Bachelor is told who to pick.
I believe they let Rachel stay on the show and get air time with Rachel to get black people to tune into the show. As I have said before, I have glanced at an episode years ago and I could be wrong, but although they had a black female on the show, they wouldn't show the date. They would show the white dates.
I hope Rachel is not trying to get her 15 minutes of fame. She's a lawyer. She needs to keep her day job.
