I read this as a young adult, need help finding this book. Published before 2007.

A girl lives (possibly moves) to a desert town and has a crush on boy 1. Boy 2 comes along and they fall in love. Boy 2 lives in the desert, possibly a rancher boy but are separated for a time and she starts a relationship with boy 1 (possibly over the time period marries him and has children.)

In the end boy 2 is shooting snakes when a bullet ricochets off of a rock and kills him. Book gives undertone that this is what his family is telling people and that the boy actually may have committed suicide over their lost love.

I figured out the book! The book is titled, "How far would you have gotten if I hadn't called you back?"
