I loved both Bromige and Walker. A New Zealand author that we may want to consider is Essie Summers. Her books are set on New Zealand's south island.

I didn't realise Ruth Park wrote adult books as well. I read The Muddle-Headed Wombat with my daughter last year and enjoyed it. Would like to read her adult novels. Another Australian author who I would like to read more of is Ethel Turner.

Another author that should fit this profile is Anna Buchan who wrote under the pseudonym O. Douglas.

October sounds good.

Random trivia - my hairdresser is a family member & has given good money for any Parks books I can source. (I volunteer at an op shop) I will give this battered copy to her when I have finished the read. :)

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 78 comments I'll try to keep my eye out for a copy of The Harp of the South, although it looks difficult to locate in the U.S. It seems to be a beloved Australian classic!

I haven't checked this time, but I remember looking for Parks work for another group & they were a hefty price on Amazon.

The few that they have available are pretty expensive right now.

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 78 comments I have a couple more suggestions along the lines of Victoria Holt (not sure if the jury is still out on that one, of if she can be added to the list) - Phyllis A. Whitney & Barbara Michaels. Open Road is reissuing Whitney's backlist, and Harper has already reissued a lot of Barbara Michael's romantic suspense novels.

In the slightly more "highbrow" arena, I'd also mention Dodie Smith, of I Capture the Castle fame, who has a few more that are available, and Winifred Holtby.

We decided the Victoria Holt part of that group was inactive so we did a read of Mistress of Mellyn a few months ago. I think there was interest in reading Kirkland Revels but no time was set on that.

These suggestions all look very interesting. I will update the lists over the next few days. :)

message 58: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (dandelion_cottage) | 304 comments I love Dodie Smith. I noticed that The Town in Bloom (which I haven't read) is $2.99 for Kindle.

I haven't read Whitney in years, but remember enjoying her books a very long time ago!

message 60: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I used to have a complete set of Phyllis Whitney's novels, but gave them up in the Great Cull of 2012 when I got rid of a lot of books in order to move into a smaller house.

Moonlight reader and Peggy, thanks for reminding me of Dodie Smith and I Capture the Castle, I've been meaning to read that for ages.

I've made a start adding to the list - some of these authors are new to me! :)

I've also added Victoria Holt to the list & I'll check later to see if the Eleanor Hibbert group has gone inactive.

Edit: A library in my area has I Capture the Castle!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments I have collected a lot of VH hardbacks at used bookstores, etc. I'd love to do some buddy reads and dust them off. :)

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Oh. I have a lot of PW too! :)

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Ok. I'm off to find out about Capture the Castle. Not familiar. I like Barbara Michaels too.

I Capture the Castle would make a fabulous buddy read!

Also, Phyllis Whitney is back in print (well, ebook) in the U.S. at least! I'd love to do a PW buddy read!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Sounds good to me! I have a lot of PW hardbacks. Don't have Castle. I can check the library.

Not sure if they've been released in Canada - yes, they are available through amazon.

Peggy (dandelion_cottage) | 304 comments I Capture the Castle is one of my all-time favorites—you're in for a treat! 😊

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I Capture the Castle is very good—hilariously funny, then sad, then painful. A great portrait of adolescence.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1234 comments I read I Capture the Castle just a year or so ago, and recommend it. It would make a great buddy read.

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Someone set up a PW buddy read. I have a ton of hers. :)

Boy talk about great minds! I've just suggested a buddy read of I Capture the Castle in the "what would you like to read with some friends" thread - for September. I have to get the book from an area library & with The Frederick the Great read I can't commit to anything else for August. :)

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments I'll see if I can get it and join. ;)

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 78 comments Enchantress debbicat ☮ wrote: "Someone set up a PW buddy read. I have a ton of hers. :)"

I want to do a PW buddy read! I can do any of these:

The Turquoise Mask
Poinciana
Domino
The Moonflower
Vermilion

If we want to wait until 8/29/17, I can BR any of these:

Woman Without a Past
Dream of Orchids
Columbella
Seven Tears for Apollo
Listen for the Whisperer
Silversword
Emerald
Rainsong
The Glass Flame
Flaming Tree

Do you have any of those?

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Sweet! Let me look. I know I have quite a few.

I have The Turquoise Mask, Vermillion, Emerald, Silversword, Woman Without a Past and Rainsong. As well as a bunch of others you don't have listed. I have a box somewhere of paperbacks that I believe some of your other titles are in. But, I do have hardbacks on the bookshelf ready to go of the ones you mentioned that Ilisted above. Any one stand out to you?

I think I've read woman without a past some time or other. Any

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Oh, no. I have not read Woman Without a Past.....so any are fine.

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 336 comments Wait, I am crazy. No Turquoise Mask. I am in too big of a hurry apparently. Or multitasking too much. It may be in the paperbacks. I thought for sure I had it.

Among the first list you suggested I only have Vermilion. So, I guess it depends on when we want to start. I can at any time.
