Basically it is about how a human colony has come to start using a video game to decide disputes. The video game is MMORPG type where people try to grind out currency. The protagonist (A male) goes against the norm and creates a female avatar that is 'pretty' rather than just all functionality.
(view spoiler)[He and a group of friends kill a dragon in the game, and in the end, they 'beat' the game destroying it (hide spoiler)]
The book has a sequel where the protagonist is a girl named Ghost (I think), and is part of the 'game' that replaces the one that ended.
When the human colony tries out the new game (where the 'npcs' turn out to be real people like Ghost) they are trapped there by the Leaders of the games Civilization. Also, the the previous books avatar is the only surviving object from the previous game.
