I always assumed that the black thing in the picture below was a bridge over a road or something ( or over nothing since the book is set in space :P). Do you agree?

That's the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. It's the walkway around the pool, not a bridge.

It may be a walkway or roadway but it is not clear that it could be a bridge.
