SOLVED. Speculative fiction/romance in graveyard [s]

Probably published 80s or 90s. Not horror! Not formulaic romance novel. Plot: a newly dead man and woman fall in love while their spirits linger in the graveyard. They both are in love with their former partners and at first only find solace in each other's company. This leads to a deep romantic love -- not physical because how could they possibly given no longer having bodies. LOL And I believe that it ends with one or the other moving on to another place after death (not completely sure about this exactly but it was bittersweet.) Very well written dialogue. I believe the author went on to write screenplays. I don't know if he has written any other book.

He wrote plenty of books, but he did screenwriting as well, including the screenplay for the movie version of his more famous book The Last Unicorn.
