Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I was crushed a few times twenty years ago. And again probably about five years ago. I can mostly wave it off now. #Whatever

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments I'm pleasantly astounded this morning. I checked my Medium Partner Program payment information and discovered that instead of the $20 or so I was expecting for the month ended 3/28/2018, I'm getting about $120. What??!!

One story earned me a tad over $100: Flip Flop, a piece about how the indie writing phenomenon has turned the writing/publishing model upside down in one particular, possibly questionable, way. What happened with this story that didn't happen with the others?

I think, because it's the only reasonable explanation, it must have been featured in a Medium newsletter. It was published on March 20th and received the usual paltry few views/reads for a couple of days. Then on March 24th it received a whopping (for my stuff, anyway) 29 views and 17 reads. It had one more "big" day with stats about half that and a fairly consistent set of days with a smattering of reads and views. It ended the pay period with 71 + 113 views (I'll explain that in a minute) and 39 reads. But oddly it had only 2 fans who gave a total of 30 claps, which isn't a lot. The +113 views are, it says, "Additional views from RSS readers, Facebook Instant Articles, and AMP. These views do not factor into read ratio."

One other difference between this story and my others: it's a 5 minute read, one of my 3 longest pieces. I have one 7 minute read with 8 views, 4 reads, and 3 fans which earned nothing, and one other 5 minute read with 20 views, 9 reads, and 6 fans which earned $2.17. That was my second largest payment this period.

Without doing a mathematical analysis (which I know you all wanted to see; sorry, it's too early in the morning for that!), I'd say that the biggest factor in payment must be either views or total read time, not the read count and definitely not claps, although no doubt they are all factored in somehow. There may be some threshold, a "tipping point" that yields higher payment. There may be more than one, and I just happened to get lucky and hit the first one with this article.

It also might not be coincidence that the article that went big for me was one about writing, and not just about writing but reflecting on the consequences of the indie writing paradigm and offering an insight about which, as far as I know, nobody else has much written.

Great news!!!

It's a mystery and each is judged on who is clapping- how many other things they clapped for. I urge our people to read other partners on Medium and clap and interact (comment)- that way our "claps" are worth more.

I have been doing that- so I can tell you- I think my "claps" are valuable.

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments Ahem . . . had I checked my email before posting that, I would have discovered that they paid me a $100 bonus for that story. So forget all the gibberish about why the story might have earned so much.

Told you it was too early in the morning . . .

As I was reading, I thought that's what might have happened, and it means they judged the content as high interest and value to consumers, which is very cool! And I'm wondering if I've missed that one, as it's not ringing a bell for me. It's hard to keep up with some of you prolific writers out there. But congratulations!

message 2663: by Dale (new)

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments Thanks Alex and Carmel! I was surprised to find they thought it was all that important and engaging. Maybe I'll stumbled into another one someday . . .

message 2664: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments That’s a result, well done. I’m still getting my $10-$15 a month but I have earnt my fees back now.

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments Amy wrote: "That’s a result, well done. I’m still getting my $10-$15 a month but I have earnt my fees back now."

That's where I was expecting to be. I was making enough each week to earn back my membership fee, so I thought by the end of three months I'd get into the black. This put me well over in just one month, which is a nice surprise.

It would be interesting to see what Medium considers "important" topics. But maybe that would make it too easy to bankrupt them. ;-)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments That would be nice to know. But I think difficult to find out.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments It's better news than they gave me, Alex. They declined to tell my followers but gave no specific reason, just a 'read the instructions' type response. I can only think that they thought my Book 3 was part of a bundle. I read the email once, asked for clarification and haven't heard since.

message 2673: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments That sucks Anna. Fear of that kind of thing makes me stay clear. But at least you tried.

Well done Alex. It’s still a step in the right direction.

message 2674: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn I've had Bookbub not send out the new release before. They usually have reasons. One was if you don't have a word count listed, they think your book is too short and won't send it out - it has to be over 150 pages (I think). The other reason is that if it's not on preorder, and you try to ask them to send it after the release date, they won't do it. (I tried to send it on the day of release, because I hadn't done a preorder, and they rejected it). You need to have it on preorder and have it claimed on your profile.

It's nothing personal, just annoying.

message 2675: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn Since I've had it happen, I thought it wouldn't hurt to share!

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

It just seems a waste. I was so pleased to think that my few followers would be alerted.

I guess they know their jobs. They're one of the best operated sites around.

The 'why me?' feeling has disappeared now!

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments NEWS! GOOD NEWS TOO! Suitable for the 'Something Good...' thread.

BookBub are going to alert my followers. Apparently when they checked on Amazon before, the page count was not showing - just as you suggested, Aislinn.

Phew! I don't have that many followers, but every single one is valued.

We have those in my area and LOVE them! You see them a lot at parks and bus stops.

message 2688: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments I've heard about this sort of thing. We have them here in the UK too, Alex. Sometimes they're in defunct red telephone boxes. My local train station has a little library collecting donations for Dogs for the Blind.

How nice to be asked!

message 2689: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments I don't have any names, sorry, Alex. I've just read articles in newspapers or elsewhere and thought it a good idea. As I still don't have paperbacks (they're coming, really they are) I didn't think any more about it.

Try Googling - it's a good idea to get the first of a series into places like that - perhaps!

Erica Graham (erica_graham) | 1496 comments Mod
If you can find some in your area, you can also drop them off in the boxes yourself. I leave my books in the little free library boxes near kids playgrounds at the park. My website allows me to track traffic and I often notice a spike in visitors around the time I do a book drop. That is really neat that they reached out to you for donations. Your books are being noticed. :)

Angel | 723 comments Deb Rhodes, a very good friend and beta reader of mine has just put out her first book, self-published by Blurb. It's a poetry book. Please share the word and links around on your social media. I also sent her an invite to join this group. Also if you need a Beta reader she is an excellent, reliable, honest and professional beta.
