At first I give into it like a weakling. I convince myself that I will never write again, and isn't it a shame for such a talent to go to waste?

After several hours, days or weeks go by without one single word being written, I begin to realize my foolishness. I laugh at myself. Because the truth is, a block is only temporary. In most cases I've found that when I'm blocked it's because there is a technical issue with my story that needs to be corrected before I continue. Maybe I need to write in a different POV, or drop a character who isn't working and really not contributing anything to the story arc. Whatever the issue once I track it down and deal with it, the power of my writer's block has been razed.

Now, if I could only remember this the next time I'm afflicted with writer's block!(less)

Getting to write!

I love exploring other lives, delving into the heart of things. I'm driven with curiosity, I want to know what makes some people seem so odd. Why do they act the way they do, do they realize they're odd, set apart from others? There are as many ways of being odd as there are individuals, and I suppose we're all odd to someone.

And what of this person who has suffered so many losses? How does he cope? What gives him the strength to get up every morning and continue through his daily routine in the face of his all-consuming sorrow?

What makes a person pinched and mean, and rigid? What kind of childhood did she have?

Writing helps me figure things out and process the world around me. I learn in the very process of writing. (less)

Poorly written

This was a disappointing read. I can’t recommend it to anyone as the writing style is uneven and the characters not fully rendered.

Deb Rhodes Aw, thanks Russ. Your book was so well written it didn't need much help from me! I'm so thrilled you signed a two-book deal.

When's the next one going to be ready for me?!

message 1: by A.R.

A.R. Ashworth Deb was the primary beta reader for my novel SOULS OF MEN (Crooked Lane, Spring, 2017). I sent my 90K manuscript to her and within a week she returned a complete report plus numerous, specific margin comments. Everything she said was on the mark, and she left my story in much better shape than when I sent it to her. Her service was well worth her fees and I will use her for my next novel!
