Westcoast_girl | 157 comments Okay..I'll try to be as detailed as possible. I sold this book in a garage sale a while ago but now I want to add it to my shelves on Goodreads (I'm a little obsessive about recording what I've read...) and I can't remember the name!

READING - I read this book about 7 years ago. However, I bought it from a thrift store and it was probably published much earlier (around the 1960's-80's?)

APPEARANCE - The book was probably around 200 pages long. It had a beige/brown spine. On the cover there was a picture of a chestnut (brown) horse that was cantering. There was a fence to the left of the horse I believe.

STORY - The book was about a girl who lived with her mom. Her dad had died or left them. They lived on a ranch/farm in a small town. They were quite poor. She had a horse named something like 'Buckaroo'. Her friend and her wanted to compete in the upcoming rodeo but she could not afford to. So she decides to find the money so that she can barrel race. She tries to sell the spoons that her aunt sent to her. At the same time she is training to barrel race with the help of the farmhand she has. The set up three barrels but her horse is not very good at racing. Then a few days later, the farmhand's friend brings over his senior horse. She is skeptical that such an old horse could do it, but the horse is brilliant. Also at the same time, I believe her mom is trying to convince her to do ballet. (which she doesn't want to.) In the end, I think she ends up barrel racing not with her own horse, but with the senior.

DETAILS -
-Her mom doesn't want her to barrel race. (Maybe because it's what killed her dad?)
-Her aunt sends her spoons from all over the world
-They have stray chickens that wander around the farm
-The senior horse was white and kind of ugly

So that's all I guess!

bookel | 4027 comments Sorry I was thinking of the wrong one. It's the below. Both were childhood books of mine usually kept together and I still have them. Would never sell. :)

The best horse by Elizabeth Van Steenwyk.
Republished as Barrel Horse Racer.

Her beautiful sorrel horse is the best in Colorado, Wendy thinks, and she knows he'd win the Barrel Race event in the August rodeo -- if only she could enter. But Mom has said, "No!" And even if Wendy sneaks in time to practice, how can she possibly pay the entrant's fee? Wendy has a desperate plan. But it's terribly risky . . .
