What are you reading in June 2014?

House of Leaves looks like a huge trip.

I have House of Leaves to read... but I'm a little daunted by its... unconventional format.

Taking a brief sci/fi fantasy break to read Midnight in Peking: How the Murder of a Young Englishwoman Haunted the Last Days of Old China. It's about a murder of an English girl in Peking, just before WWII. It is quite gripping!

I have a huge pile of books to choose from after that (and it will include Alchemist of Souls)

Read California Bones today after seeing it on a list from io9. Interesting world and decent ideas, but the characters just didn't connect with me. Seemed rather flat.

Rushing won't be an issue. It will be awhile before I can read more than a few pages without falling asleep.

On the bright side, I'm down to the last 100 pages of TWoK.

Just finished a 3 book series by Anne McCaffrey called Crystal Singer. This is a reread. Not as good as I remember it, but still fond of it. I had surgery a couple of weeks ago and my brain has actually been kindof loopy even before that, but doing better now. I'm going back to listening to Ghost Story by Jim Butcher tomorrow. Right now, I cannot multitask. I lose track of the story.

I think everybody has fluctuations during the year where they just can't get into reading. I have 8 books started and just couldn't get into any of them last month. Now I'll try to get to Ghost Story so I can move on that list.

If every week was like this week, it would take at least a month. My 100 hour week will be finished in about three hours, so I'll have some time to relax and read finally.

Though I'll probably be too sleepy to read more than a page or two for a few days.

So... Good news... Bad news. Good news, I've been working. Bad news, no time to read. Not like I'm used to anyway. And as I mentioned earlier this month, I'm having a hard time reading on my nook tablet. I'm on the computer 7+ hours a day and by the time I get home my eyes are done for.

Anyway - yesterday I finally finished Before I Go To Sleep - I had to skim it though. The idea was okay, and I did like the ending. But it really dragged for me. A woman has amnesia and every morning when she wakes she doesn't remember who or where she is. So- every chapter feels the same as the one before. It would've worked better as a shorter story.

Before that I read The Enchanted because I read it was fantasy/realism and I've been into those kinds of books lately. But to be honest - I didn't find it to be fantasy at all and I was disappointed. I've read better prison stories. And there was no characterization to speak of. (In my opinion - most readers seem to love the book.)

Now I'm reading Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend. It's about a boy with aspergers from the POV of his imaginary friend. I like it so far.

I'm having a heck of a time reading anything lately. I have four books started and none are to the half way point.

Then I've got The Souls of Black Folk as my In-the-car-and-waiting-around book. I pick it up and read a little bit whenever I'm out and need something to read for a few minutes.

Then I re-started The Color of Magic, FINALLY. I had started it ages ago, but the formatting of the ebook was making it terrible to read, so now I've got a better one and it's.... interesting. LOL

I finished Authority which I thought was not as good as Annihilation and started another scifi book Old Man's War, I am on a roll with scifi just now. I can't wait for Scalzi's Lock In to come out in August. I hope I will be ready for another fantasy read afterwards either being Emperor Mage or The Amulet of Samarkand

Jumping back into fantasy now with Prince of Fools. I enjoyed Lawrence's other series but so far this book feels like book #4 of that instead of a new series... It is supposed to be a new series... Right??

I'm almost finished with The Color Of Magic and umm... yeah. It's different. I'm not really finding it funny. I realized this after I googled if there was a movie version (I know some of the books have been adapted), and I found a Youtube clip which made me laugh after about 4 seconds. I realized that I hadn't really even cracked a smile while reading this, which kinda sucks. I've been more confused and just playing along hoping it all makes sense at the end. Now I'm getting toward the end of the book and I'm not sure it does.

Is this supposed to be like 4 interconnected mini-stories or something? Because maybe I'm just reading it in the wrong mindset and that's the problem. I'm expecting novel and what I'm reading is actually a collection of separate stories that are only linked by setting and main characters.

I DNF'ed the Color of Magic and then read the Tiffany Aching stories (the first two, at least). Those were much more to my liking.

In my defense, I've always said the earlier books in Discworld - and the Rincewind books in general - are the weakest (in my opinion), and it's one of the few series I tell people not to worry overly about reading in order.

(Actually, it's kinda like a bell curve - the middle books are generally my faves, with a few exceptions here and there.)

Fair point. This is the only series where I had to make myself an Excel spreadsheet to mark off the books I've read and the books I own. (Though this was partially 'cause I lost many of the books I had when I moved back from Ireland and asshole tossed my stuff.)

I'm actually enjoying the series. First two were a bit confusing and tiresome to read because of the formatting and footnotes. But I started to enjoy the others more. Surprisingly, I'm finding the footnotes in Sourcery funnier than the story itself.

Nicki, I think that explains a lot. I'm not really familiar enough at all with any of those authors or their books to have gotten any of the jokes. I've read.. one, maybe two McCaffrey book(s), and about the same with Lovecraft (I really WANT to like his writing more than I actually do. *sigh*). The others... *shrug* I don't even think I could name anything they've written.

So. yeah. It seems that I am not the intended audience for this one. Shame. I disliked A Night In The Lonesome October for the same kind of thing. If you're in the know and get the references, it's great... but if not, it's just baffling.

We own House of Leaves, and I've always kind of meant to read it - especially since I'm a fan of his sister, Poe - but I know Jer read it and didn't seem too impressed by it, iirc.

You have a good point. Color of Magic is actually one of my favorites in the series. But I'm also a big fan of Lovecraft and Leiber. So maybe that's why.
