Kelly Have you ever been bullied because of the way that you looked? Did you know someone who was bullied? Did you help them? Did anyone help you? What were the obstacles you faced? How did you overcome those challenges?

Wonder tells a story about a kind-hearted boy named Auggie, who faces many challenges. Auggie is the boy who hid behind helmets and only wanted to be looked at like the rest. Why? Auggie had many surgeries throughout his life. This caused his face to look different from what would be “normal.”

Auggie finally gets to go to a school on campus. He finds himself as the outcast. The one nobody wants to be near. The one that everyone is scared to look at or the one that everyone looks at and then quickly looks away. He faces mean words and actions daily from a group of bullies. Auggie also had a moment when a parent expressed crucial words about him to the principal.

Although this book focused on Auggie, Auggie’s sister Via had her moments as well. We feel the pain that she goes through when her friends leave her out. We understand what it feels like to be “forgotten.” We also know how she feels when she thinks her parents favors Auggie the most. Though she goes through her own challenges, she is known as the protective and loving sister.

Despite the challenges that Auggie faced, he is comforted by his loving family, great friends, and an amazing principal. I would say that Auggie’s best character traits are humble, kind, and strong. He stays positive, promotes positivity, and never gives up.

R.J. Palacio did a WONDERful job. I felt a warmth of inspiration to spread love while reading this book. Never judge a book by its cover. FIVE STARS. A MUST READ.
