okay so my little 13 year old sister has been bugging me asking if she can read my copy of The Fault in Our Stars before the movie comes out on June 6. I haven't let her yet because I'm trying to protect her from the mature content in the novel. she's like a goody two shoes (sp? hah) meaning she doesn't swear and blushes at inappropriate things. I have no idea whether or not I should give in and just let her read it despite the mature content.
People of GR--please help! Let me know what you think I should do please! (:

Emily | 68 comments Honestly, I'd say no. I'm sure many 13 year olds have read it and I think if they are mature it would be ok. But it doesn't sound like your sister is really mature enough for it.

Stacy okun (stacyo40) | 111 comments I just finished it last night. there is some kissing and a mild sex scene that you have to actually use your imagination for because it says NOTHING.
That being said, it IS about death so consider how that will affect her, then make a decision

N | 276 comments Maybe you should talk to your Mum or a responsible adult who knows her? If she is going to watch the movie then I think reading the book is fine, my daughter read it last year when she was 12.

DB (DB's Guide to the Galaxy) (dbgalaxy) Tfios has some mature language included, but then again-what film or book nowadays doesn't? Talk to your sister and explain to her that the book has some mature content in, but she can talk to you at any time about the content.

Katie.g | 129 comments Yeah I think you should talk to ger about it first if you let her read it. I thibk she's on the tail end of being a bit young. When she's 14 I'd say it will be fine. I did see a 10 year old reading it a couple of months ago. Really wanted to say something but it wasn't my place and wouldn't stop them reading it.

Kate (rx_queen13) | 10 comments Hmmm, I think this is a judgement call. I would probably let her read it tbh. Just because she acts in a certain way around you e.g. no swearing, blushing at inappropriate jokes; doesn't mean that she is too immature to understand/handle certain topics. I may be wrong, but I think most 13 year olds act differently and have more adult conversations among their friends than perhaps we first think.

I was reading adult fiction from 12 years; I think this was because I wanted to widen my reading choices.

So, yes I would warn her that it has adult themes and let her try it :)

Marie (clarisse723) | 31 comments I've read this book when I just turned 12 years old. (I'm turning thirteen in a month, and a lot of friends and classmates of mine have already read this book too.) I think it's okay for your sister to read the book as long as she remains open-minded about it. The events that transpired weren't even erotic or something so I guess that's why I was fine with reading them. I think she would be too.

Helena Armengol i Biosca (helenarmengol) It's perfect even for a 13-years-old kid. I really loved it and I read it when I was 14.

Linh (pieceofpaper) I read it when I was 13,but everyone,i guess, can say it changes a lot of your throughs and yeah it's still about livibg and dying. So if you say it's too early for your sister, don't give it to her, you know her better than we do :)

Ash (morethanfairytales) | 115 comments I was both a voracious reader and something of a goody two-shoes when I was a young teenager. However, if anyone told me that a book was forbidden, no matter how good their reasons were, there was a 95% chance that I would find a way to read it. I'd echo the sentiment of everyone here and encourage you to openly discuss the themes in TFIOS with your sister, then let her judge for herself.

Bridget (bridget224) | 66 comments okay thanks everyone! this is why I love GR. (:

Emily | 68 comments Looking back on it, I'd say everyone else is right. I think I was forgetting some of the books I read when I was 13! I like the idea of discussing the topics and themes with her, then letting her choose.

Mary-ellen (missy666) | 545 comments My niece is that age. She just read it and loved it. All her friends have read it too. I wouldn't be concerned, by that age they can handle the themes and content in this book.

Athena (childinteenclothes) | 3 comments I'm 13 and i read the fault in our stars, and i felt that it was appropriate. A couple of times i had to reread the letters Hazel wrote to Peter, but other than that, i could understand most of it and of course i cried at the end.

Bridget (bridget224) | 66 comments okay thank you to all of you, I think I'm just going to give it to her (:

Avid Reader and Geek Girl (avidreaderandgeekgirl) | 1572 comments I think it will be fine. The sexuality is very minimal and everyone needs to understand death.
