For those of you that would be interested in adding another book (starting March) we would be reading a specific author. Who should we read?

We will read a one book by a specific author each month. We will stop reading the books when we read all of the author's books or when we have lost interest and we want to read someone different or a series.

Please suggest authors that write deal with diversity below. Diversity comes in a lot of different forms: LGBTQ, gender stereotypes, age, race, ethnicity, country, language, disability, ability and much more.

You have till 2/11/17 to suggest books :)

Brina I have many suggestions but I will start with Isabel Allende.

message 3: by Carol (last edited Feb 08, 2017 07:29AM) (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) I suggest Bernice L. McFadden. A great starting book: Sugar: A Novel.

Valyssia Leigh | 5 comments Jhumpa Lahiri would be a good choice. The Namesake was a lovely read.

message 6: by Brina (new)

Brina I just read The Namesake and would love to read more Lahiri. Great choice!!!

Wow! These all seem like great authors :) I can't wait to see what everyone votes on.

My suggested authors:
- Jacqueline Woodson
- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
- Linda Sue Park
- Kent Nerburn
- Sharon M. Draper
- Ellen Hopkins
- Julie Anne Peters
- Catherine Gilbert Murdock
- Cherie Bennett
- Judy Blume
- Sonya Sones
- Sherman Alexie
- Fredrik Backman
- R.J. Palacio
- Ellen DeGeneres
- Eve Ensler
- Paula Fox
- Dave Pelzer
- Beatrice Sparks

To be honest, it does not matter what we read. I am very excited to do an author :)

message 8: by Brina (new)

Brina All of my favorite authors are listed-- Allende, Adichie, Lahiri, Woodson, so I would love to have an excuse to read more of their books. But it would be great to branch out, too

ColumbusReads (coltrane01) | 21 comments Nice suggestion, Carol. I read Sugar by Bernice L. McFadden and was blasted by friends because i gave it a lukewarm review. I guess some books it's like blasphemy to criticize. Learned ny lesson. I would love to read more of her work though. She has like a rock star following in the literary world. I know and found out the hard way. Haha!

Here's some other authors. This is a great idea, Mariah....

Edwidge Danticutt
Lawrence Hill
Louise Erdich
Paul Beatty
Percival Everett
Walter Mosley
Nella Larsen
Jamaica Kincaid
J. California Cooper

I am not a Moseley fan, but love the rest of this list.

J. California Cooper and Bebe Moore Campbell from LaTonya's list are rock stars, to me.

I also second Toni Morrison. I've only read God Help the Child by Toni Morrison God Help the Child but I really want to read Beloved (The Trilogy, #1) by Toni Morrison Beloved (and everything else she ever wrote).

Sorry I have no authors to add. Wonderful suggestions so far!

J. California Cooper

message 17: by ColumbusReads (new)

ColumbusReads (coltrane01) | 21 comments J. California Cooper is known for her short stories. My choice would be her first short story collection, A Piece of Mine: Stories. I've been looking forward to reading her work for years!

message 19: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) I couldn't be more excited. I nominate In Search of Satisfaction.

message 20: by Brina (new)

Brina Cooper is a new author for me so I am happy with whatever book is chosen.

Besides the books that were suggested for the first read, what other books would you like to read by this author? I need to know, so I can schedule out the next couple months :)

message 24: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) I propose we add these two to the ones we first identified.

Life Is Short But Wide

Homemade Love

My library doesn't have The Wake of the Wind, but has all of others, so if it doesn't come in until late in the month, I will join with the April read.

Great suggestions! The Wake of the Wind is the only book my library has… I added the books you suggest to July and August or did you want them to be alternative books for the next two months?
