Nicole | 226 comments I read this one about ten years ago. It's a middle-grade book set in Canada.

A girl, I'm pretty sure her name was Amanda is bullied and ignored at school, her teacher is always trying to find her people to hang out with. The class is going on a field-trip down the river, and some girls mention that her backpack stinks (it smells like campfire.) They go on a raft, but something happens and she and one of the boys who was mean to her fall overboard. They manage to come to shore near to each other as it's getting dark. Amanda knows that a plant is safe to eat so they eat it. They find an old cabin and wring out their clothes. I was thinking that they were around ten, but she mentioned wringing out her bra, so they're between ten and fourteen. They spend a number of days in the cabin and Amanda knows how to find things to eat. They make a fire, catch some fish and cook the edible plant that they ate raw when they'd first been lost.

At one point Amanda makes some holes in a (probably pine) tree and gets pine sap which she uses to create a fairly good tasting hot drink. The boy can't quite break his bullying behavior and says that it tastes okay when his first reaction made it clear that he thought it was really good, and Amanda finally stands up for herself saying that if he doesn't like then she'll take it and prying it out of his hands and drinking it. They work together to put one of their life jackets in a tree, hoping it is bright enough to attract attention, and then they drag fallen branches to a clearing to make large words asking for help, and they start to get along. In the cabin, they had found three pioneer-style outfits, a man's, a woman's and a little girl's. Amanda has a weird dream, or maybe the boy has a dream and tells her about it, that they are grown up, but look the same, they are married and wearing the clothes from the cabin. She is cooking something and he comes in and asks why she's cooking the children, and then he floats up through the chimney.

When they are rescued, Amanda says she forgot something and goes back into the cabin, thinking to get the clothes, but she decides that they belong in the cabin and decides to leave them there. The people who rescued them kick apart the wood words asking for help. Amanda feels a brief sting of resentment because it was so much work to put the message together, before she remembers that if they leave them there more people will come to rescue people who had already been rescued. As they are flying away in the helicopter, they realize they left the life-jack stuck at the top of a tree and laugh about it. When they get back, the teacher asks them if they're okay and Amanda turns away, drawing back into herself, expecting to be bullied and diminished as she always was before, but the boy surprises her by complementing her.

I think this book was narrated in first-person, present tense.
