A boy who doesn't speak English well is trying to find this book in our school library. It's about an orphan boy who makes trips into town to steal food, which he brings back to share at the orphanage. One day he gets caught, and a man shopping in the store steps up to pay for it. Eventually, the man ends up adopting the boy and two of his friends from the orphanage. The requester also mentioned something about kings or princes, that the boys were training to become rulers or something like that?

The part about the boys training to become rulers sounds like The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. I'm pretty sure the main character gets caught stealing food at the beginning of the book, also.
