Her nervous condition is the conflict between her Shona roots in a male-dominated society and her Colonial education. She, as a female, is raised to accept her role as a dutiful female and to not question male authority and hierarchy. She draws the line at Babamukuru's insistance for her parent's wedding and her subsequent refusal to attend.
