No spoiler - but it wouldn't hurt appreciation of the story to have some appreciation of calligraphy and drafting on the frontside of your read...At least, it did for me.

The first clue that the "pilgrim" is Jewish is the barukh he recites. Albeit in English since Brother Francis understands the words but not the significance.

It's stunning how many things you can see that Brother Francis does not get. the description of what he fears in the fall-out shelter, especially.
