I felt sorry for Neil, but I could never warm up to Penny.
The most sympathetic character for me is Angus Murray, the doctor.
The book ended with the author talking about Canada's role in the world.
The book was written in 1941, during the second world war and Canadian soldiers stepped forward, just as they did in the first.
Here is quote from the last chapter. Neil says : A man has to think he hasn't got a country before he knows what having one means.
