PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Ok, we're in the home stretch! What did you think of Alleyn's detecting skills? Does he remind you of any other famous detectives?

LovesMysteries | 327 comments So what do you guys think? Would you read any other Inspector Alleyn mysteries in the future? I got my eye on a particular title called "False Scent" which I'll probably read at some point. Or I may just start back at the beginning with "A Man Lay Dead" and re-read that again and work my way up through the series. There are so MANY books to read but I need to work my way through to "TBR" list for 2017 so the Inspector Alleyn series may go on hold for a bit.

Won't look at the above posts so I don't spoil as I'm almost there. Wow, lots of action at the end. Should be done with book soon.

Anastasia (anastasiaruff) | 241 comments I loved the book and was stumped even though it was a reread. I think I prefer the ones where Fox plays a bigger part- he is like Hastings to Poirot. From memory the ones that take place in the theatre seem to be her better ones.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments After reading this one I wouldn't mind looking at other Marsh works. I do like Alleyn but I'd also like to meet his wife. I remember the priest saying he knew of her because of her paintings and that's why he figured out who Alleyn was (I believe). She sounds interesting!

Done.

Mini spoiler -

As noted, I rarely pick the right perp. lol Okay, as for Ms. Marsh's nasty, I just don't think there were enough red or blue herring, clues on this guy. Almost like she picked another and changed at last minute. And as far as the motive for the killings, that seemed a pretty thin reason for doing the crimes. Didn't take much.

Author's writing offers fine plotting but the prose seemed to drag me through the story. Then again that can be attributed in part to the era. Contemporary audiences are harder to astonish esp. with all the stimulation we get in this modern age. Not fair in a way but there it is. Just a thing.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I didn't pick up on any clues s throughout the book so I didn't guess correctly. First, I thought it was Mr. Cuddy and maybe Mrs. Cuddy was in on it or knew about it! I enjoyed it though I found that it took me a long time to get through.

Other than being nasty, I didn't have any clue to the perpetrator either!

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I don't think I'd want to encounter any of those people on a trip! Maybe Bridget since she seemed nice but the others weren't my cup of tea!

Nicole, Pghfan, PI's, I thought it was Mr. Cuddy right from the start. The herrings thrown about led me in that direction.

A writing tool that authors often do employ is to change perp near the end. I think it's because the characters change along the way or to fool the reader and not make the outcome too predictable. Not sure I like that slight of hand tactic.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments It seems like it's just to mainly fool people. I know a lot people will say that they guessed the outcome right from the beginning and were disappointed. If I guess right at any point I'm ok with it but more often than not I don't get it right. Sometimes I eliminate the "most obvious" right off.
