ABANDONED. Fantasy- Alt World set in Colorado (10+ years old)

Hi guys!

Had a customer come in today with one that completely stumped us, and it's driving me crazy.

This is what he can remember:

He hopes it was a series, but he doesn't know for sure. it ended on a cliffhanger though. He read it about 15 years ago.

2 main characters, teleport to another world, teleportation device possibly moves around the US.

They need to get some sort of device or thing at a colardo Bank.

There is a character(possibly the antagonist) who is referred to as shadow.

Book ends with one of the characters somehow being on a plane and the plane crashing in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
