Marissa | 390 comments Can I actually bump my goal up to 50,000 miles? I'm going to try and really challenge myself. The books I'm planning on reading next include some locations that are very far from one another, so I might be able to get this done. Thanks!

Here's a clarifying question...

I know intergalactic voyages doesn't count ;). But with "A Hitchhiker's Guide...", it starts off in the UK, would the starting point-UK count?

That's a great question, and I think the answer is, "Absolutely." It's a setting in the book, and it's a real place on Earth, so it satisfies the requirements.

Lynette Caulkins | 147 comments Not sure how my upcoming stack plays in this - (How do we handle non-fiction books - go by their place of publishing?) But I'll bite, because it sounds so fun! Expecting to get through 5 books, most of which are based in the Americas. I'm going to guess at a goal of . . . 12,000 miles.

Wait, let's modify this, because I forgot my Shakespeare reading. . . how about. . . 26,000 miles. Starting point: Monument, Colorado

message 72: by Christy (new)

Christy Santos | 27 comments My goal is 25,000 miles.

My reading plans for February include 8 books from the Morning News Tournament of Books. Homegoing should give me some serious miles but I'm not sure about Version Control which seems to be a time travel, rather than a physical travel book. We will see!

Starting point is Philadelphia, PA.

message 87: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 238 comments I'm in for 10,000 miles

SPANNING THE GLOBE
Duration: February 1 - February 28, 2017

In keeping with our Around the World theme, let's travel through books! Set a goal for the number of miles or kilometers you plan to travel. With every book you read, choose the setting (or settings) and calculate how many miles there are between that point and the previous point using this calculator.

Rules:
- Only books based on this world count--sorry, no traveling to different galaxies. :)
- Use each setting in each book once; even if the characters travel back and forth, you can only count the setting for that book one time
- You may revisit the same setting in different books (for example, you may read two books that both take place in New York City)
- Use your best judgment on which settings in each book should be included; you should only be using primary settings
