Lisa Verge Higgins is the RITA-nominated author of eighteen novels that have been published worldwide and translated into as many languages--quite a switch for this former PhD candidate in chemistry. A mother of three, this five-time RT Book Awards finalist has won the Golden Leaf, The Bean Pot, and twice has been anointed by Barnes & Noble's General Fiction Forum for their top twenty novels-of-the-year. Her stories about women’s lives and women’s friendships have been described by critics as “joyous,” “uplifting,” “full of humor, love and life lessons,” and “inspire us to focus on what’s really important in our lives.” When not writing stories, Lisa is reading them as a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books. She currently lives in New ...more

Rules of Civility by Amor Towles
When I was in first grade, a poet named David McCord came to read some of his work to our class. By the time he was finished, I knew I wanted to be a writer. That night, I read one of his books and began writing poems that were inspired by his. From that point forward, the mission of my life was simple: Read, write, repeat. I read and wrote fiction in high school, read and wrote fiction in college, read and wrote fiction in graduate school. But when I arrived in New York at the age of twenty-five and entered a career in the investment business, I set aside the writing of fiction—telling ...more

Radio: it ties a million ears to a single mouth. Out of loudspeakers all around Zollverein, the staccato voice of the Reich grows like some imperturbable tree; its subjects lean toward its branches as if toward the lips of God. And when God stops whispering, they become desperate for someone who can put things right.
One winter day in 2004, I took a train from Princeton, New Jersey to New York City. The gentleman in the seat in front of me was talking on his cellphone about the sequel to The Matrix, and we were racing along at 40 or 50 miles per hour, and as the train dove beneath the Hudson River, his call dropped. And the man got angry. He swore, rapped his phone with his knuckles, and I thought: What he’s forgetting—what we’re all forgetting, pretty much every time we expect our mobile phones to function—is that what he’s doing is a miracle. He’s using two minuscule radios crammed inside a little slab ...more
