So, I come from a small island in the Mediterranean called Malta. I would be surprised if most of you have heard of it, let alone visited! I would be very interested to hear anyone's views on any novel written by a Maltese author. There probably isn't an extensive list of books written in English. As I said, the country is very small!

Hi Rachel, it just so happens my grandparents on my mother's side are both from Malta! It is on my bucket list to someday go there.

Sure I know of Malta, I even remember the capital. It's one of those that are easy to remember because "valetta" with one L means "without a lie" in Finnish. :D Actually a friend of mine worked there as an intern or something some years ago, six months, I think.

I wonder what I will read for this because I have visited most of the countries I usually read books from. Interrail a few years ago makes it even more difficult...

I'm currently reading The Dry by Jane Harper for a different challenge but it would fit here. The author was born in the UK and moved to Australia at age 8. The book is set in Australia. I'm not too far in yet but it's super good and I've read rave reviews.

I started reading the book for this prompt, but I then found out she was born and educated in England but resides in Australia (I think she has citizenship), but I felt it was cheating. I have been to the UK but not Australia. So I ended up moving this to the advanced list :)
However, it is very good and had me guessing to the very end.

Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah (he grew up in South Africa as apartheid was ending). I cannot recommend this highly enough, especially the audiobook version where he is doing all the voices (and correctly pronouncing all those foreign languages)! He's a comedian, so it's hilarious at times, but his family also went through some pretty intense stuff. This was a book where I loved it so much I was sad to have to turn it back in to the library. A billion stars!

I slotted The Three-Body Problem into this category. It's a stretch, depending on how you view Hong Kong because I've been there but not mainland China. I feel it's sufficiently apart from mainland China to count.
