ok I could do author surname beginning with T Gioconda for a card 2 - i have this from the library and will not need to take it back until after UNO starts

and I can read a book 5 in a seriesThe Art of Becoming Homeless which i can get on kindle unlimited for a 5

I will also compare a couple of shelves and see if i can read something someone else has

As far as I've understood it, no. We get a hand of 7 cards and one book has to fulfil one of the options on one card and then that card is completed. All in all you read one book per card.

Is this correct? :)

Haha, I just did! :D It's kinda complicated, but I think I've got the gist of it now.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 1155 comments we have to wait for our hands to be dealt

as far as i can see we get 12 hands, complete one at a time, one book per card

So as far as i can see we cannot do anything until we get our hands - does anyone know when that is ?

message 59: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Yes, there's one book per card, or if there's a Draw 2 you can use one book to complete two cards but that can you leave up to the captain to decide if you want to:)
A hand consists of seven cards. You have to complete one hand to be able to add the points you get in the next hand. For example, if you have completed hand one, have completed two cards in hand two and completed hand three, you only get the points for hand one plus the two books you've completed in hand two. Hand three in this example are wasted. Did that make sense?

We can work on all the hands at the same time if we want, as long as we're able to complete the hands before the month is up.

so thiese books stand 1 works for hand one and one for hand 2

can we put them in before we read or do we wait until they are read

message 64: by Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady (last edited Jan 24, 2017 02:37PM) (new)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady Okay, I thought I had it but now I may be confused myself.

We get 7 cards per hand but we only have to read 1 book per Card so that means if we read 7 books we complete the hand?

And for each card there are options but we only have to do 1 option correct? For example in Hand 1 we have a card # 3
So someone needs to read a book that fulfills ONE of these requirements:
3 (Three)
Read a book that:
- has a 3 or Three in the title
- has a title starting with H
- has an author first name or surname starts with H
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with H
- is set in a place name starting with H
- is book 3 in a series

So if I plan to read "Storm Front" as my first book, then I can use it for this Card #3 because the Characters first name is Harry

Is that right?

So
1 book per card
7 books per hand

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady Marie wrote: can we put them in before we read or do we wait until they are read.."

I do know you have complete the book first and put in on your UNO shelf marked as Read and then we can put in on the spreadsheet.

If we are going to claim spots you can tell us which card you want to read for but we can't get points till you read it.

I will read for 5 on card 1 and 2 on card 2

I have some books on my kindle that Dragana has read
The Mine
The Journey

so can do one of them when we come to reverses

Yes:)
We don't get any points till we've finished the books, but we can fill in the entire spreadsheet in advance if we want and know what we want to read. Nothing is written in stone until the end of the month when the mods check it in order for us to get our points.

Marie, it's really good that you keep an eye on what we can use as Reverse! They can be tricky sometimes:)

message 69: by Tina (last edited Jan 24, 2017 11:42PM) (new)

Tina | 768 comments I usually do like this:
- I choose a book I want to read
- I put it on my UNO-shelf
- When I've finished the book I mark it as read and let you guys know in this thread that I'm done and which cards it works for.

message 70: by Ingeborg (last edited Jan 25, 2017 02:52AM) (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments I have a few I can use.

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut works for both 5 (5 in title) and 6 (Title starts with S). So I have several options for that one. We have two 6 cards in our first hand. So this goes for either 5 or 6.

Metro 2033 (Metro, #1) by Dmitry Glukhovsky works for 2 or 3 because of the numbers in the title.

Would this be correct? :)

I would like to offer these two as a start. My reading pace is a bit up and down depending on how my life is going at any given time, but when I'm in challenges it tends to be a bit quicker. :)

message 71: by Rachael (new)

Rachael Hewison (rachhewison) | 459 comments Caly is correct so each card is basically one book and we only get points as we finish each hand. For me to record one of your books you must mark it as read and put it on your Uno shelf.

Ok so cards we can do so far:

Marie can do a 2 and 5
Ingeborg can do a 5 or 6 and 2 or 3.

My first one can go into 8 or 0

message 72: by Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady (last edited Jan 25, 2017 04:11AM) (new)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady Morning all!

Okay, I think I get it now. 8-)

For my first book I am going to read Storm Front
which will work for 1, 3 or 6. Also if anyone reads it after I do it will work for Reverse

As my second book I will read The Vegetarian
which works for 0, 2, 3, 7, Skip, or Reverse since Marie has already read it.

I do now. It called Uno.

And After reading this thread I read the rules again and it makes sense.
My first book will be The Sympathizer which fits in 0 as a stand alone or maybe in 7 as being partially set in a place starting with V. The Sympathizer

It works for 7 because of the Authors first name as well and could be used for 9 because of his last name
and 2 and 6 because of the title "The"= 2 "Sympathizer" = 6

I think most of our books will have multiple slots which is great!

Happy Reading Alissa!

Yes, most books can fit a lot of cards, so it's usually no problem to fit them all in:)

That's right, February 1st. One more week to go;)

I'm a mood reader as well and since it's a whole week till we begin, I would never be able to decide what I'll read now:)

Rachael Hewison (rachhewison) | 459 comments Hello, I've had a play around with the spreadsheet and added the books people have suggested so far. I've tried to give everyone a card per hand.

For hand one we still have 9 and 6 to fill and for hand two a 9.

For those that are mood readers, just let me know when you've finished a book and I can slot it into available cards :)

Can't wait for 1st Feb!

Looks great Rachael! I can't wait to get started either. 8-)

And I do have a book that will work for one of the 9s so I will put that on my up and coming radar. Unlike the mood readers, one of the reasons I love team challenges is it helps me decide which books to read from my ever growing list.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady Hi Ozana!

Welcome to the team! I am Caly one of the co-captains. I am in the USA in TN and this is my first time playing UNO.

Have you done many team challenges? And have you read any of the Harry Dresden books? Most of us on the team haven't yet which we find rather funny.

Look forward to having you on the team and getting to know you

Caly

Ozana Ozzy (barbozzy) | 27 comments Hello my New Team members!
Thank you for your welcome.

I live in Croatia, in Europe, country next to Dragana.
I must admit that I didn't read Harry Dresden books yet but I'll correct my neglect soon, as you all :) What a paradox.

I never played UNO before but I'll catch up soon.
I played 5 years in a row long challenges in group Nothing but reading challenge and couple moths ago we finished last one which lasted 4.5 months. I've met Maria Helena there from Iceland and she told me about Uno and this great group.

I can't wait to have fun reading with you and play Uno and with such worm welcome. . I'll catch up soon. I am so happy they let me play it because I was little late but now I can't wait to start!

I love fantasy, Ya, science fiction but not long series and good trillers and cosy detectives characters. Fiction too. I have no problem with reading whatever we need for game and team.
I can agree with any aragment and I see we have great Team and captain and co- captain.

I am not sure about your first question but I do know that you can re-read a book as long as it has been 6 months.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady I also see you played WOBBLE in the group Nothing But Reading Challenges! I did too and loved it. It is what got me hooked on team challenges. What team were you on? I was on the Red Pandas.

Hi Ozana, welcome to the group!

I'm Rachael and I'm from the Midlands of the UK. This is my third Uno challenge.

A few of us have picked our first two books and the rest will read some to slot in later. Do you want to pick some to start or will you just see how you feel? Either is fine :)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady Rachael wrote: "Ooo what's the Wobble challenge?

WOBBLE was a 5 month team challenge over at NBRC. It consisted of 6 different events, one for each letter in the word Wobble, like Wheel-a-thon and Bingo. It was great fun because it lasted so long we could really get into it.

Since you choose few books already maybe you can tell me what we need first. I am reading few books but I didn't put them on yet. Do you want me to? I am ok with whatever we need first.

I am really sorry, I am working afternoon until 11pm this week, I am working on National tv so we are always working. I reather work evenings than morning. I am not morning person, reading late at night and going " early" to bed, than I love to sleep longer.
I think that in USA you don't have concept of National tv, it's common in Europe.
