Sarah | 1012 comments I finished The Reptile Room today, it was nice and short.

I also started a new audio (will take at least a week) - The Faceless Ones. Works for 2 (title), 3 (#3 in a series), 4 (title), 6 (char Skulduggery), 7 (char Valkyrie), Skip (char Skulduggery Pleasant).

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments We're off to a great start!
We already have 4 books finished, yay!

I've updated the spreadsheet with all the books people have mentioned they are interested in reading, but please let me know if I have missed any. Also, don't worry if I have added a book you mentioned, but that you no longer want to read. I won't place any books into hands until they are finished, so if you want to swap out books, that is not a problem.

Zahra (skipdips) | 66 comments I finished reading Curtsies & Conspiracies just now. It works for 2 (#2 in a series), 4 (char: Felix Mersey), 6 (char: Sophronia), 7 (char: Vieve), 8 (set in England), 9 (char: Captain Niall).

message 111: by maria helena (new)

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments No worry Emily!

We have all of February to finish our 13 hands (which will require a total of 77 books unless I've counted wrong...)

So far, everyone are just reading whatever books they want to and listing all the different cards they work for. That gives us lots of options to move books around if needed when we fill out our hands.

If you need/want a more specific task to find a book for, some options are:

1) Cards we will need the most of: 2 (T) and 9 (N)

2) Cards we have the fewest books for so far: 9 (N), 3 (H), 4 (F) and 8 (E)

3) We have 3 reverse covered already, but any books that overlap with the other team members' read shelf are always helpful.

Glad you found it!

If anyone else is looking:
- our current hands are on the tab called February in the team spreadsheet
- an inventory of the books people want to read/have read is on the tab called "book tracking"
- post #6 contains a summary of how many cards in total we need for each card type

message 113: by Emily (new)

Emily Storey Walker (emily_asw) Brilliant MH! Thank you for explaining it all to me helping me catch up :)

Well I'll definitely be picking up a book tomorrow, if not tonight so I'll get cracking with any of the hands above/the ones you have mentioned we might need (if I can coincide one that is!)

Looking forward to actually being able to sit and read again! :)

message 117: by Emily (new)

Emily Storey Walker (emily_asw) So this is my little list of books I'd like to read promptly - hopefully over the next few weeks if not faster if I can for this challenge :)

Passenger (Passenger, #1) by Alexandra Bracken
Which works for card 1 (1st in a series), card 8 (character: Etta) and Skip (Title: Passenger)

Wayfarer (Passenger, #2) by Alexandra Bracken
Which works for card 2 (2nd in a series) and card 8 (character: Etta)

Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5) by Sarah J. Maas
Which works for card 2 (place: Terrasen), card 5 (5th in a series), card 6 (author first name: Sarah) and card 8 (title: Empire)

Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2) by Victoria Aveyard
Which works for card 2 (2nd in a series), card 7 (author first name: Victoria) and card 9 (place: Norta)

Hopefully I didn't miss a card that any of these matched buuuut this is what I'm hoping to crack on with soon anyway, and there will probably be more to come :D

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments I've finished my first book: Devil Bones

Devil Bones (Temperance Brennan, #11) by Kathy Reichs

I know what you mean! I've had a crazy week at work and have to work some this weekend (which is usually when I read the most) but I'm definitely gonna enjoy relaxing with a good book for a bit on Sunday.

Great list! Those books works for so many different cards which makes it easier to get all the hands sorted out.

I've added them to the spreadsheet. If you find any more cards they will work for while you are reading them, just let me know and I will add those :-)

Ashley Karczewski (ashleylorna) | 152 comments maria helena wrote: "Wow Ashley, you're on a roll! Looks like you found a good series to read! "

Yeah I know, I'm really enjoying this series! Once I start a new series I find it so hard to stop until I'm finished! I've already started the next one now.

message 122: by Emily (new)

Emily Storey Walker (emily_asw) It's just so sad sometimes because there are so many books I'm desperate to read and just not enough time!! But I know that when I can grab a cup of tea and snuggle down with a book I'll never want to put any books down again! Then I'll read straight for as long as I can - so I'm super excited because next week is a very quiet week for me, only working a little bit, other than that I'm free! So eagerly awaiting the time to sit and read again!

I'm glad the books on my list are currently working well, and if I notice any more place names/character names that fit I'll let you know. Do we know if by character it has to be main? What if there are a few main characters in the book? For example in Empire of Storms we have the main character but then some chapters are from the perspective of Manon (another character) and then there are quite a few scenes/snippets and extracts all from the perspective of other characters such as Rowan, Chaol and many others! Would any of them count to character 'letter' - I know specifically non of the above mentioned would work for any of the letters but what if one of them did match, would that count? Or do we have to purely select the main lead / what if there are two main leads like The Murder Complex where each chapter is swapped between the female and male lead! I hope I'm making sense because o know I've gone on rambling a bit! I'm just curious :)

And Ashley I totally agree once I start reading a good series I just can't stop! I'm one of those readers that often refrains from reading series until they are complete purely because I'm too impatient to wait a year or more between books! I'm currently waiting for the Outlander series to be complete before I start it, and I did it when I read the Mortal Instruments - I ended up reading them all in a week so I was super glad I didn't have to wait years for each of them, like I'm currently having to do with the Throne of Glass series! It's sooo annoying have to waaaitt! But I guess I'm going to have to learn to be patient. I'm assuming you are enjoying the series? I had a sneak peak of what it's about to see if I'd be interested in reading it one day and it does sound rather interesting! Have you had any particular thoughts on it? Or is it just really enjoyable? :)

message 123: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Karczewski (ashleylorna) | 152 comments Emily I'm the same with you, I don't often wait til the series is completed but until they've got a few I can binge read! I'm currently waiting for some books from a few series and it's killing me, haha!

Yeah I'm really enjoying the series. I love the imagination of the author she goes into so much detail. I also love the use of different myths surrounding the different Gods too. I like this series because there's always something going on to keep me interested so it's very enjoyable to read! I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy fantasy/paranormal/romance genres! :-)

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments Clarification letters for characters and place names

For characters, it doesn't have to be the main character. The guidelines I use are:
- The character need to take part in the dialogue (i.e., it cannot just be that the main character mentions her grandma Elsa in a conversation, the grandmother would need to be participating in that conversation for us to use her name)
- The character should be an integral part of the story. If you can just remove that character and it doesn't effect the story at all, the character isn't big enough to use for a card. So if in one scene the narrator mentions that the neighbour Norman walks by and says hi, I would not use his name)

For place name:
- According to Karen, it should be the name of the main setting of the book. So if a book takes place in Los Angeles, we would use L (not California or USA) but if the book takes place in multiple cities in California, we would use C.
- So for example, the book I finished today is set in North Carolina, but in the book they are always specifying that they are in Charlotte, so it would be used for C, not N.

Does that make sense to everyone?

The Outlander series is one of my all-time favourites. I keep wanting to reread them all every time I'm waiting for the next book to come out (but it is quite the project....). The tv show is great too!

I only read the first book in The Mortal Instruments and I didn't like it enough to continue the series (but I love the tv show based on it).

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments Ashley wrote: "I've been wanting to read the Mortal Instruments series ever since I started to watch the tv show, haha! Just never got around to it yet!"

At least the first book is quite different from the tv show (or rather, the tv show is different from the book). Unless I remember it completely wrong, the main characters are quite a lot older in the tv show.

message 128: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Karczewski (ashleylorna) | 152 comments I have just finished reading The Tainted Web (The Godhunter #7) by Amy Sumida :-). This book can work for card 2 (title), card 6 (author: Amy Sumida) or card 7 (7th in series).

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments I've started listening to Devices and Desires by P.D. James
It works for:
- Card 8 (8th in series)
- Card 9 (place Norfolk)

It's going a bit slow, so it will probably take me about a week to finish.

message 130: by Zahra (new)

Zahra (skipdips) | 66 comments I'm currently reading Neverwhere: Author's Preferred Text by Neil Gaiman. It works for 0 (a standalone), 5 (char: Iliaster), 7 (char: Mr. Vandemar), 9 (title), reverse (Sarah has read it). A slump is slowly taking over me, so I think it'll also take me about a week to finish it.

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments JUST FYI...

- I have updated the information in post #5. It now has a link to the countdown for the end of the month, when books for the February hands must be finished.

- I have also added a link to the spreadsheet with the current scoreboard. This might not be the "true" points for each team because it depends on when the captains are updating their spreadsheets (some teams might not put anything into their official spreadsheet until the end of the month).

- I have added our finished books to hands, just to get us started. We already have 165 points! If needed, I will move books around between hands but you don't have to worry about that :)

- Halfway through the month, I will do an update and let you know if there are any specific cards we are in dire need of. So far, most of the books people are reading will work for at least 2 or 3 different cards so we have lots of options on how to place them!

I hope everyone is enjoying the first few days of Uno and that everyone has some great books lined up to read :-)

message 132: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1012 comments It turns out that when my current audio is on CD (from the library) it isn't convenient enough to cover all listening opportunities, so I started another!

The Omnivore's Dilemma: The Secrets Behind What You Eat, Young Readers Edition - works for 1 and 2 (title), and Skip (author).

Avamuc | 132 comments So, finally I finished the order of the Phoenix and started to listen to another audio book. The Die Känguru-Chroniken Ansichten eines vorlauten Beuteltiers by Marc-Uwe Kling should work for:
1: first in series
Skip: author: Mark Uwe Kling
It's a book about a guy who lives together with a kangaroo.....it's kinda weird but hilarious

Kazen I finished Twilight Phantasies (Wings in the Night, #1) by Maggie Shayne - about halfway throught I was going to give it two stars but everything went downhill fast. Heroine without agency, heroine as bait, heroine surrounded by violent men, one of whom hurt her out of love or some such. Grah! So glad to have it over and done with. It works for:

2 - title T
6 - author S
8 - character Eric

It will work for:
Card 0 - stand alone
Card 2 - "two" in title
Reverse - Read by Kazen

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments During last year's Uno, in addition to the regular hands, we also had mini challenges with special tasks where we could earn extra points.

The mods just announced that there will be a mini challenge in February. We will get the details on February 14. Any guesses what it could be? I think the theme will likely be something related to romance/love/valentine's.

Huzzah! It's only my first Uno so I can't take an educated guess but I would totally go for something romance-y. :)

For example if I would read the first Narnia book in this collection The Chronicles of Narnia Complete 7-Book Collection with Bonus Book: Boxen would it work as one book? I got it as a kindle deal and saw that it would work nicely for some cards :D

The best thing would be if you shelved that individual book you read (even though you are reading it in the boxed set).
