I've just finished reading chapter 9 :) for now I cannot really get into it.. I'm not a big fan of his writing style and all the digressions. As a non-native English speaker, I find it difficult to stay focused on the story.(view spoiler)
I am around 8th chapter. The flow of the story is good. I like the little puns in places most unexpected. :-)
I just started on chapter 7, and I hope to get a bit more reading done on the train in the next two days. ;)I still find the English book more enjoyable than the German radio play I listened to two months ago because most of the puns just don't translate well - or don't work at all if the translation is kept close to the original.
I find the use of the Guide inside the story rather ingenious: It allows for the author to do explaining of his fictional world as well as commenting in a satirical way without footnotes or readers' address (if you know what I want to say by that) or any other clumsy means...
I have read through Chapter 9. I am enjoying this book. I teach space science to middle school students. So I enjoy the mention of places in space in a humorous way. I am currently teaching this unit so I find this story refreshing instead of bogged down with facts.
A guy I work with has recommended this book to me on several occasions. I'm glad I can finally tell him I'm reading it after it being on my TBR list for almost 2 years now!Ready for chapter 6. It's only a little fast paced. I'm surprised I've kept up so far lol.
Just finished chapter 8 and it's so far not what I've expected. I love the puns that are made, but fast pace in the writing is a little odd for me. I'm getting used to it now, but I do like this book! I never knew it was a book when I saw the preview for the movie a while back.
Just re read these chapters and discovered I may be in need of therapy of some sort. The dialogue--I know the dialogue.
I finished this today and I wondered if you guys got drawn into the story at once or if it took some time? I found it took some time to get used to his style. It was different to say the least.
Winter, this was my first Douglas Adams book and I was pulled in to the story right from the start. I think I can actually pinpoint the exact moment: it was when (view spoiler) =)
Winter, it took me about 50 pages to get pulled in to the story. I don't remember that it took that long last time I read it.
I'm with Ida on this! I think I remember getting into it pretty quickly when I read it first, but for whatever reason this time it didn't really kick off for me until somewhere on the Vogon ship. Like I said somewhere else though, it's pretty much off to the races once we get to that. :D
I don't know why but I was the opposite. The beginning was so intriguing. It starts out basic and I kept thinking where it this going I thought it was a sci fi lol. Once it reached the section about Vogon's control room, I lost a mild amount of interest. Like I said on a different thread, I was listening to Stephen Fry read it. He helped me out a lot in the middle lol.
